1. okra rocks
Okra is proof there is a benevolent supreme being and that it loves us.

Fried okra is a little slice of heaven on earth. Even the batter-dipped kind you get in restaurants. But the best is my mommas. Just rolled in corn meal and deep fried nice.

Mmm...drool.

2. Tell me, please, what's good about okra?
It always seems extra slimey and foul, the only way I've been able to eat it is in really spicey gumbo, because gumbo has all kinds of wierd stuff that masks the flavor. But I figure there must be some reason why people eat okra. I want to appreciate okra, really I do.

your mind about this misunderstood little vegetable. My kids even love it. That's saying alot!!!!

35. Here's a recipe link:
http://members.aol.com/Ladyfolks/hotwater.html

I never used a recipe, so I wouldn't be able to tell you how to do it, but I could show you :-)

But the recipe linked above is VERY similar to the way I make it, my mother makes it, and my grandmother--who taught us both--used to make it.

You have to try it...it is DELISH!

18. Well you probably cook it with animal fat
and I am a vegetarian. But I think I would rather eat uncooked pork then that green viscous slimy thing you lovingly call Okra. :)

31. Okra's not slimy when it is fried in a cast-iron skillet well-done with
a bit of cornmeal sprinkled on it before it hits the grease. My mom uses crisco, and it is still delicious.

Hey, I just ate grilled zuchini for the first time, against my better judgement, and it was delicious. Try okra and don't be a food snob!

amazed that someone had enough time to put together an entire okra website. I googled it for fun,, and was amazed.

29. What a wonderful website--I've just wasted an hour there.
I especially liked learning about the virtues of okra for health.

I do think that neglected, under-appreciated veggies make great lounge topics. When I have more time, I think I'll start a rutabaga thread. Cumberland, Wisconsin has a Rutabaga Festival in August that I caught one year, but I'm still pretty ignorant about it.

7. It was Southern California. I didn't know any better.
I steamed okra. It was like a scene from Ghostbusters - "I've been slimed!" I couldn't believe it.

Big mistake.

I've since had fried okra - I like it, especially with ranch dressing as a dip - and I also developed a liking for okra, tomatoes, and corn over rice (much better for you than the fried stuff). And it's essential in gumbo, of course.

Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 08:15 PM by brigadoon
I love okra fried, boiled, anyway.

My family loves it best as a creole dish with onions, tomatoes, green peppers, cumin, gumbo file and chili pepper. Mix up a big bowl of mashed potatoes and serve over the potatoes and YUMMMMM.

21. OK. How about Fiddleheads?
I'm an equal opportunity veggie hater cause I think they all suck cept taters, corn, (onions, peppers, garlic, onions, and herbs- veggies?) , so please, don't accuse me of bias. ;-)

But has anyone heard of Fiddleheads? (I don't like them either BTW) The reason I ask is that I think it's another regional thing. I had never heard of Fiddleheads till I moved from NJ to Maine. It's a big thing around here in early springtime.

I have tried it cooked every way it is possible to cook it. I did not enjoy it.

Okra is the Vegemite of the South: you're raised on it, and you're the only ones who can stand to eat it.
