Very good list. I haven't heard of all of them. I'm going to print it out and explore those I don't know, and reacquaint myself with some I've forgotten.

One question: Did I miss it, or did you leave off Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight?

I'm currently working on a list of my favorite soul records of the 1970s. Rest assured, I'll rank "Midnight Train" pretty high!

band -and in the 70's with "afrocentric garb"/Muslim names!

Perhaps they fit better with a Funky list for the 70's - along with Earth Wind and Fire.

But should Kool & the Gang "soul" of the 60's make your list - as in the 1969 "Kool and the gang"?

I read todays reviews of them and they sound second rate ("Earth Wind and fire on a bad day"!) - but I recall them as nice - perhaps showing my lack of critical judgement!
