neighbors partying, should I call the cops?
OK, we're in an complex and our apartment is close to the BBQ pit/volleyball court. We've lived here about 8 months... but I've never seen such an obnoxious crowd. I really want to go to sleep. My kids (3 and 1), luckily, are sleeping fine. But, I won't be able to sleep.

Should i go out? Deal? Call cops?

2. In an hour, by all means yes
Looks like it's 11pm in KC (if that's where you are). After midnight, it's generally fair game to insist on quiet, and the cops will likely agree. Before then, however, you might not get much support.

I've noticed that even the moderate- to high-end apartment complexes seem to be attracting lots more of the down-on-their-luck crowd these days. I've never seen so many junked vehicles sitting in our parking lot, and I'm in supposedly decent digs. People are constantly moving in and out, either due to job losses or simple inability to pay the rent. There's no pride in, or sense of, community, and our few common spaces are quickly going to rot.

3. I would call now
Don't let them think this is acceptable, or they will think it is their right.

That of course, assumes you have local noise ordinances in effect.

Hey everyone, wish me luck! I'm not a buzzkill, really.. but it's late, and I don't want to have to contend with sucky music.

5. The thing is, these people are doing nothing
that they couldn't do in their own apartment. That's why I don't have much sympathy. And their choice of music sucks. guess that's what it boils down to. ;)

19. Absolutely! There is probably a clause in your lease re
"peaceful enjoyment." This means what it says. You have to guage for yourself whether you are likely to receive the protection you need if you call the police. However, do call the police/911, whenever anything happens!

6. Have several beers
and either join them or make as much noise as you want with your OWN music

Oh yeah. You'll scare the kids.

OK join them. But make sure your don't wear a shirt.
Then for sure you'll end up on "Cops"

Just remember unless they have access to crank, they'll all drop soon.

17. ya' never know
We had the party from hell going on here awhile back and I had to call the cops three times to get the noise down. Three times!! I'm way back on the private road and have a house with walls that are 18" thick but the bass beat was driving me nuts. I even had ear plugs and my noise cancellation technology headset (same things the airport traffic directors use) and it still didn't help. And the colossal nerve. I went down the road to see whose party it was and there were huge SUVs blocking the road. There must have been 30 of them out there--big hulks, like the Yukon, Suburban, Expedition and Excursion. Not to mention the Hummers.

The next day I found out whose house it was. Some rapper's mother. Guess he was having a little party at Ma's house. Good grief, can you imagine what would have happened had I gone down there myself? When a neighbor told me his name, I put it in a search engine and found out the guy recently hit a record exec over the head with a bottle and stabbed him in the chest and back.

18. Try this next time....

At one time I lived in a fairly large apt complex. They contracted with a rent-a-cop service and tenants knew to call them with neighbor problems. I called them on 3 or 4 different occasions, but if they showed at all it was a least an hour after the fact.

I thought by calling them that the leasing office was would be informed of the complaint. Not so.

Apparently there was no communication between the two parties. I mentioned that since they're paying these people they might want to check out what they were doing. The leasing office said they would look into this great concept of mine

Won't bore you with all the calls I made but end result was that I gave up on them solving the problem. So, I used an address lookup internet site to get the phone numbers of the noise makers. Make sure you use the call blocking feature just in case.

I would then call them, saying I was with the xyz security company and that we've received several complaints about their party. I told them that if we received one more call we would alert the complex, who had it in their power to evict them. That if they didn't believe me they should check their lease. This worked on several occasions, plus I have to admit it was fun.

By the way, if you are in KC I used to live there. Actually, even if you're not in KC I used to live there. Great place!

21. Deal, Alert Property Management, and Prepare to Move
Response 1:

If the party's keeping you awake, join them.

Response 2:

Deal for tonight, or call the management.

Response 3:

Definitely call/visit management ASAP in the morning, let them know you think it's unacceptable.

If they do nothing to quell it, and there's a 'quiet' clause in your lease, you now have the means to break said lease, IF you have the resources to deal with them (if management wants to be a pain in the ass). If you don't have the resources, wait out your lease, and when you move, make sure management knows why you're going.
