17. So. . . (heavy philosophical question coming up) when an indie

band is signed to a major label, what would you call them then? (Assume that they are still making the same type of music.)

And, (part 2) what do you think of once-indie rockers like REM, B-52s who were already on major labels 15-20 years ago? So you consider them a) classic indie rock or b) passe or c) something else (please define.)

Since I'm no longer teaching, I'm curious what college students are thinking these days.

18. I would still consider them indie
if they kept the sound they had before (ie Modest Mouse).

I've always thought of REM and the B-52s as just alternative. Classic would be like the Velvet Underground if anything.

19. Ah, but how does alternative differ from indie -- in your view?

Can a newer band be alternative, too? I know it's difficult to classify music without overlaps and exceptions, just wondering what you think, what category you would look for in the store.

24. in my opinion, no
alternative has been dying for a long time, and died after the breakup of the Smashing Pumpkins. I've always thought of alternative as grunge and post-grunge, but before the 90's it clearly was different, i suppose then ironically the difference was that it was more mainstream (considering the name), it's practically a useless phrase now. And I usually go to the punk/ska/hardcore/indie section of the store in Mankato...
