I would like to ask for good thoughts for my wife...
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 07:16 PM by Mikimouse
She has been admitted to the hospital in Louisiana, with a severely low platelet count and multiple mini-hemmorhages on her face and body. She was at the clininc yesterday because of a week and a hlf bout with flu-like symptoms, and they got really excited when they got her blood work results back. She went to the hospital last night and they gave her a large dose of prednisone, and then sent her homw, with orders to come back today. When she arrived, they drew some more blood and found that count was even lower, so she was admitted this afternoon. She is currently getting pred. and gamma globulin IV and a bone marrow biopsy is planned for later in the week. We don't really know what the diagnosis will be, but it is not going to be an easy one, I fear. I am making arrangements for my classes to be covered, and will probably leave for Louisiana on Thursday. I know I have talked about our problems here from time to time, but things have been improving over the past couple of months and we have found a new appreciation for each other, thankfully without our son being around to screw things up again. She is my best friend and my soul mate.

17. How old is your mother? We are not young, per se, but
middle aged. My understanding is that ITP (see the posts below) can spontaneously occur at any age. She just didn't need this, even if it turns out to be completely treatable. We are anticipating our third grandchild any day now, and she was planning to get 'home' in June for a conference and to see our daughter and grandchildren.

8. Thinking of you and as an aside,
my 16-year-old niece presented with the same symptoms about a year ago. She had zero platelets. Her diagnosis is ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura), which basically is the inability to make platelets. She has had an up and down course and then got her spleen out, which made everything fine for seven months, then she got an infection and relapsed but is doing okay again. I think the worst fear of everyone is cancer, but I think if the white count is okay then it is probably not cancer. Somebody with more knowledge than me can tell you more. All that to say it may not be as life threatening as you first think. Keep your hopes up and let us know what happens.

12. My first thought was von Willebrand's syndrome...
but it begins to look more and more like ITP. Von Willebrands generally manifests in a number of ways, but nosebleeds seem to be characteristic. She had not had any of those, so ITP is what they are pursuing right now. I know that she is scared of cancer, and I have tried to allay some of her fears, but since I have been out of the medical field for some years, I no longer have the credibility I once did. Thank for the good thoughts, they are appreciated

as well, on the differential count. They are more concerend with it being ITP as was suggested in an earlier post. Keeping fingers, toes and all other available appendages crossed.

She is supposed to present a paper in early June in Winnipeg at a conference, and see our daughter and our newest grandchild (who has not yet put in an appearance, but any day now-momis ready to be unpregnant again!). I had originally told Mrs. Mikimouse that I couldn't go because of my class schedul during summer I, but maybe I can arrange it so that I don't miss too many classes.

31. I hope that you are correct...
After all of the times that she has sacrificed for everyone else in the family, this was the beginning of 'our' time, so to speak. She was looking forward to finishing her doctorate and getting into an environment where she could really shine. Instead, she ends up with this hospitalization and a scary future. The fact that we currently have a commuter marriage doesn't help at all, because she is in Lafayette, LA, and I am in College Station, TX. Such is the life of academics.

33. Update on original post...
Mrs. Mikimouse is resting comfortably at the moment. I just spoke with her at length. Her platelet count dropped to 2 this morning and she is getting pred. and gamma globulin tonight. BP is fine and stable, so it doesn't seem that she is bleeding in any critical places. I will keep everyone updated. I love you all, if I haven't said it before. Thanks for being here for us.

She sounds like a truly special person. I am a little confused about the prednisone, however. I was prescribed this for an asthma attack. It made me extremely hyper, I should tell you. I am so happy that you have worked things out and have found each other, again, and you both will be in my thoughts and prayers. You can't beat DU for positive vibes. 58. She is a very special person...
There is a wonderful, sensitive and compassionate person that only I know, underneath the tough facade she presnets to the outside world. The facade is a function of her childhood, and her mother's unreasonable expectations of her. We have gotten through a lot of difficulties in the past, and I suspect that we will get through this as well. Ironically, we probably needed something (though not anything this drastic) to show us both just how much we do love each other. The pred., if I understand the reasoning (and it does make some sense), is this: They are trying suppress her immune system so that she ceases to produce the antibodies that are destroying her platelets (autoimmune response). They are also giving her gamma globulin to try and initiate an immune response so that she produces 'good' antibodies to the 'bad' antibodies. Kinda like trying to establish equilibrium again. I cannot tell you how much she appreciates the good thoughts and karma she has gotten from DU. Thank you many times over.

She is a very special person, indeed, if you feel this way about her. I think I understand about the predinsone, though it did seem odd to me. I do know that it is used for a lot of things, including for my pets, which I worried was a hit-or-miss proposition. Let's hope that her doctors are more sure of themselves. My thoughts and prayers are still with both of you.

DU karma is a powerful thing. It has awed me many times. She is also fortunate to have this in her corner. Please let us know. You know that we care and will be thinking of you both until we hear good things.:grouphug:

I have tried to respond to all of you in one form or another. If I have neglected anyone, I am immensely sorry, but I have been distracted numerous times while writing. I want to say a heartfelt and sincere thank you to all of you. I will be heading to Louisiana as soon as I can. All I have to do is get someone to cover my classes tomorrow and Friday, and that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish; I am just waiting to hear from my various 'bosses' (I teach at three different institutions, so answer to more than one 'boss'). I am at a loss for words when I try to think of a way to express my gratitude to all of you in this confusion. Hugs to all of you, and my very best thoughts going out to all of you. Thank you for being here for us.:grouphug:

68. Thank you so much Skittles...
There is an irony here. Before we met, Mrs. Mikimouse was selling plasma and platelets to pay her tuition and living expenses (assistantships don't pay much), and now here we are. I will certainly convey your good thoughts to her tonight and then start a new thread with an update. Many thanks and hugs to you

If good thoughts are healthy (and it has been demonstrated that they do have some health benefits) then she should be running the marathon tomorrow. ITP seems to be quite treatable, so I am very hopeful. Hugs.

71. Fingers, eyes, & toes crossed for Mrs Mouse..
Having walked hundreds of miles of hospital hallways with our oldest son, I can sympathize with the "scary-ness" of it all, but it sounds like her doctors are on top of things..

Hopefully they will have her stabilized and on the road to recovery ASAP :)
