It's always too hot or too cold. You have only a few changes of clothes. The food sucks. People who are dumber than you boss you around. The only excitement is blowing things up. And you are absolutely SURROUNDED by 'kill 'em all and let GOD sort 'em out' freepers.
Having said that, I loved being a tanker. Can't explain why.
I am sure there is more to that song. My father was a tanker in World War II, and that is all I remember of the lyrics. But what I do remember is something I will never forget, LOL.
Although I wasn't a Tanker, I spent a lot of time with them and the M60A3's we had. The only thing I didn't do was fire the main gun. One of the finest units I ever served with!
We were a seperate Bgde of the 4th ID Fwd, and the duty was spectacular.
It was a hell of a lot better than being infantry. We didn't have to walk; we could carry enough c-rations to be picky about what we ate; and we could carry beer into the field with us. Which we shared with the grunts. Let me tell you, you NEED those guys in the jungle.
9. We stayed busy pulling in broken down tanks on alerts!
It's a good thing the Russians never tried to force their way through the Fulda gap! Nothing in the world like roaring down the highway in an M-88! Awsome power in that huge gasoline engine! Comrade got the hell out of the road when they saw you coming in an 88! 'Iron Momma' was my home away from home! Warm in the winter Shady in the summertime! And yes, we ate real good!
