It's 16 years old and has to be replaced.

Anyone have a general idea what a new central air conditioner with heat pump will cost for a 1350 sq. ft. home?

1. Try just the condenser first.
You can get a not top quality one around here for $1500.

installed for $5000, and we live in Phoenix so our needs are huge! We already see a major savings in electric costs and the house is staying much nicer (we have been in the hi 80's and 90's already)

Ours was 18 years old and we had patched it and patched it. Wish we had replaced it 2 summers ago

edit to say our house is the same size as yours, and Home Depot has a good "Home Improvement" loan at 6.8% and they take care of it right in the store.

4. just did it in december,
1500 sf 3-level townhome but have gas heat, so that system is more expensive than a heat pump. Went from a 1.5 ton a/c compressor to a 2 ton. Just used the a/c over the weekend. 74 during the day while at home and 78 at night. Just great. The old system at 74 would not have been so comfortable.

Cost me around $6K total, but i added a whole house humidifier and upgraded on the actual fan system to a variable speed motor. Really big difference.

Replaced a 17 year old system.

If yours is 16, don't mess around. Replace everything.

5. Before that...
You may want to check the 'starter capacitor.' It's an outside chance... but they are a lot cheaper to replace. (You may have already done that, I realize.)
