What's your "I hit a deer with a car" story?
Anyone who's ever lived in the woods has hit at least one deer...at least that's my guess. When I lived in Stateline, NV, everyone I knew had hit at least one...including me...

It was spring, but in Tahoe are you never know when you'll suddenly get a snowstorm, so if you attach snowplow equipment to a car you leave it attached until Summer. Anyway, I lived down a road where we had a communal Chevy Blazer that was used to plow the road, since it was private and the city had no plans to plow it.

Anyway, I was driving down the highway around Round Hill at night and I took a turn and right in front of me was the biggest buck I had ever seen, standing there, just like the saying goes, trapped in the headlights. I slammed on my brakes but the roads were slippery so I slammed right into the poor guy. Boom. Snap. Gore everywhere.

So I get out of the truck and look around. My neighbor was with me and we surveyed the damage. MAN! The deer was toast, but so was the front end of the blazer! The snowplow attachment was in good condition still, but man I never knew a deer could do that much damage!

Part of the deer was still stuck to the truck too! Part of the deer (not really sure which part) was stuck in the radiator/grill part, and steam was going everywhere.

I asked if we could make vennison with the deer, but my neighbor laughed and said the meat would not be worth eating. So we waited for a tow truck.

Vennison explodes - who woulda knew?

1. I clipped a deer N. of Rochester, MN with my right front headlight/fender.
Quite a bit of damage. Then there was the time I came upon a car that minutes earlier had slammed head-on into a moose (in central CA this time). There was very little left of the smallish car (Honda Civic, maybe?). The driver and passenger were already out of the car - I suspect they had been wearing their seat belts...

2. a few months ago, early spring
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 05:08 PM by dweller
traveling back home from the grocer, i rounded a curve and spotted a group of deer on the left side of the road, and immediately started slowing down watching them....slowing down waiting for them to do something...continued slowing down til almost at a stop right before i was inline with them, when they bolted across the road and right into me, driver front, side and fender. I was still going around 10-15mph, and sent them all 3 sprawling even as i jerked to a complete stop....the milk flying from the front seat and exploding on the dash and all over the floor....

the deer flopped around on the road about 5 seconds, and frisked off into the woods. I think i heard them laughing at me...

took out a parking light, part of the grill, and put 3 grapefruit sized dents in the fender...
the first time i ever hit a deer and i get 3...

friggin deer.

3. there's a lot of whitetails around here
and I'm always careful and on the lookout when driving.

My sister hit one a few years ago and totaled her car. Luckily she only received very minor injuries from the accident.

4. Here in Oklahoma, people hit more cows than deer...
Actually, I made that up, but it sounds good. My dad hit a cow back in like 93. He was coming home late one night after a long haul on the truck to New Mexico. He came over a hill and hit a black cow on the passenger side of his truck.
I see a lot of deer on the side of the interstate and wonder how the people kept GOING after they hit that.

5. Traveling between Minneapolis and Hibbing, MN
I came head on with a deer. Thinking the stinker was going to turn around and go back into the woods I didn't bother to slow down until he ran out in front of me. I probably slowed to about 20 when I hit him, but *smack* He went flying into the ditch.

Thankfully I didn't break the windsheild. However, he put a sizeable dent in my hood, messed up my license plate and headlights. The estimate on it was $1700 bucks! I took the money and had my dad fix it with a rubber hammer. :)

And poor deer...he died. I called the highway patrol and they came out to make sure he wasn't suffering. It's amazing. :( The poor guy!

6. One morning....
One morning my carpool was driving to work across the Salt River Pima Indian Community land and, there by the side of the road, upside down was a cow! We didn't hit it, but we sure were curious about the car that did.

7. Two made it, one didn't
Came around a corner on evening and three deer were standing in the middle of the road. They bolted. Two made it, one didn't.

I pulled over and went back to pull the carcass out of the road and three, count 'em three, other cars ran over the body! There were deer bits everywhere!

Fortunately there was no damage to my truck.

8. That's good
Personally, and I KNOW I will get flamed big time for this...

But honestly, I really hope we as auto drivers can wipe out the "deer in the headlights" gene through population thinning.

I'd love it if Deer mutated a gene that actually made them RUN when they see a car, rather than just stand there.

10. A deer hit my mom's car once.
He jumped off an embankment and landed on her hood.

I don't think the car survived, but apparently mah just stopped and didn't wreck it or anything.

12. Once during my internship...
...with the sheriff's dept. I was involved in a car deer accident. The officer I was with was flying down a country road to a domestic disturbance. Out of a corn field a deer came prancing into the path of the car. The car hit the deer with enough speed that it completely disabled the car and flipped the deer onto the hood and through the windshield (or should I say the back half of the deer). The deer then proceeded to shit and piss all over the inside of the Crown Victoria, and all over the officer and myself.

To make matters worse because I live in a sort of small county with few police our back up was sent to the disturbance and the officer and I had to sit on the side of the road for close to a half hour covered in shit and piss with a dead deer stuck in our windshield.

13. I was a kid at the time...
My parents were driving a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutless Limited Convertable, with a bad top. The floorboard was rusted through at a couple of places, and one time while driving down I-70 out of Lake St. Louis, we ran over an already dead deer. Scraped rust off the bottom of the car, and sucked in hair and rust particles into the car. Talk about a stink!

14. coming home from a math class
on Monday, Sept. 10, 2001. That was such an awful week, each day bringing terrible news, the least of which was the beginning when my husband hit a deer. More damage was done to our old car than the whole thing was worth, plus I felt bad about the deer. But all things considered, that was probably the high point ot the week.

16. one autumn evening driving up Hwy 101 in Northern California
it was foggy and very late 3:30 AM or so(I had just finished a cocktail waitress shift in Sacramento). I was driving a Vega go to Bodega Bay to rescue my boyfriend with a broken down truck full of dungenees crab.

Anyway I go over a rise in the road and spread across the whole road is 5 Mule deer. I was only a few yards from them so I just let off the gas and hung on to the steering wheel.

I hit one and it bounced over the top of the car. I didn't feel any damage to the car so I kept driving. 20 minutes later I arrived at my destination and the only mark of my adventure was a pile of steaming guts on the bumper in front of the grill. The car was just the right height to up end and gut the poor thing without damaging the car at all.

My stupid (very) ex boyfriend says "Why didn't you stop and pick it up? We coulda had venison all winter" I just looked at my mini skirt, nylons and 4" heels and then gave him the dreaded "I'm your woman ??why??" look.

21. We hit lots of them when I was a kid in northern MN
I can think of at least four that my mom and dad hit. I hit one myself when I went back up there for a visit after I moved down south. I was driving a full size Chevy van on an iced over dirt road in the middle of winder, and a little fawn jumped out right in front of me, slipped on the ice and fell, and I ran right over it. Killed it of course, but didn't even make a dent on the van. Some old dude who live around there drove up in a pickup a couple of minutes later and asked if he could have the deer, and we said yes, and he hauled it off.

22. Two stories, neither with deer, or maybe both
1. Many years ago, I am driving through Banff National Park in my '74 Beetle in the dead of night. Moving at a good clip. A glimmer of something catches my peripheral vision, and for some reason I hit the brakes, as hard as I can. Good thing too, as I stop mere feet from a herd of elk, big ones, crossing the road. What a big elk can do to a Beetle, I don't want to know. It still makes my skin crawl.

2. Recently, my cousin hits a moose at about 65 mph, totally stoving in the front of his SUV. Air bags do NOT deploy. Car manufacturer, who will not be named here, gladly pays for repair in exchange for silence. Needless to say, he won't buy another one.
