Somebody recommend me some jazz.
Please. :)

I already have quite a lot, y'know, the normal stuff. Miles. Trane. Bird. Ornette. Some Chet Baker. I want to get into some artists I'm not currently very familiar with. Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Oscar Peterson come to mind...stuff like that, but I mean what of theirs is the way to go? Suggest away, aficionados!! :hi:

4. mary
foster conklin

http://www.maryfosterconklin.com/teachout.html

CONNOISSEURS of popular singing live to quarrel — some of them seem to like it better than listening to music — but most would probably agree that Ella Fitzgerald was a jazz singer and Bobby Short isn't. Between these two extremes, however, lies plenty of room for doubt, confusion and even creative ambivalence. "I've always said that I'm a hybrid," said Mary Foster Conklin, a highly creative singer whose style blends cabaret and jazz so thoroughly as to defy any kind of easy categorization. "I like to surround myself with jazz musicians — but ones who know the lyrics. I like to be able to jump the fence and borrow from both camps."

Ms. Conklin is a slightly built woman, of an age she prefers not to disclose, with amused eyes and a salty, low-flying mezzo-soprano voice, which not infrequently plunges all the way down into contralto territory. Like many cabaret singers, she started out as an actress, majoring in theater at Connecticut College, and is usually heard in cabaret-type settings like Danny's Skylight Room in Manhattan, where she will be appearing on Sept. 12 and 13. But the songs she sings there, and the way she sings them, bear little resemblance to conventional cabaret fare. It says a great deal about her style that in 1999 she won one of the MAC Awards presented annually by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs — as a jazz singer.

5. Dexter Gordon is a favorite of mine
In particular I would recommend Homecoming:Live at the Village Vanguard. A virtuoso at the height of his powers.

Given your preferences, I's also recommend Sonny Rollins. Check out Saxophone Colossus or Tenor Madness.

6. "Ballads" by Dexter Gordon is great
I'm at work and my collection is at home. So it'll take a few minutes to collect my thoughts. What kind of stuff do you want to explore? More of the bebop era. Or more modern stuff. Also, what kinds of music do you enjoy? Sax? Quartets? Piano trios?

type stuff...I only say that because it's basically what I know. I like the combo stuff; trumpet, drums, piano, sax, bass kinda thing. Clearly I'm no connoisseur, but I know what I likes. ;)

edited for clairity as there is no form of music called *brebop* of which I'm aware...:eyes:

16. McCoy Tyner
"The Real McCoy". Best album from Trane's one-time pianist.

Do you have any Mingus? You need Mingus. "Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus" or "New Tijuana Moods".

Got Monk?

Get some Milt Jackson too. MJQ is good, but also his solo music. Or get his collaboration with Wes Montgomery called "Bags Meets Wes".

Also, Branford Marsalis, who is far more progressive and interesting than his stodgy brother. Try "Crazy People Music" or "The Dark Keys".

If you want some really out there stuff, John Zorn.

25. not that I know of
I think that was John Cage, the avant-garde composer. Zorn plays jazz sax in a combo with a thrash-metal fury.

I think you'd like the McCoy Tyner - it's a full combo.

Oh!! One of my VERY favorite jazz albums is Eric Dolphy's "Out To Lunch!" d'oh, I forgot to mention that above.

17. Richie Cole
is pretty cool as far as bebop goes. He is an alto sax player.

Dex and Sonny Rollins are great suggestions. If you are into tenor players and like more contemporary stuff, check out Michael Brecker.

If you like more modern big-band type stuff, I love Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass.

Later,
JM

19. With Wes, the key is making sure there's no orchestra
Any small ensemble record he makes is going to be excellent, particularly those with the Wynston Kelly Trio. One thought would be to get a hold of the Verve compilation, Introducing the Jazz Masters, which features one cut each from 16 Verve artists, including Wes and the aforementioned Oscar Peterson. The Montgomery number, a cover of Coltrane's Impressions that just flat smokes is what got me started on my own Wes journey. Is here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000046RS/102-6257411-9061722?v=glance
If you want to try out some younger artists, saxophonist Antonio Hart and bassist Christian McBride sort of leap to mind, though I guess they aren't so young anymore.

22. Oscar Peterson is my favorite
I would very highly recommend 'Exclusively for my friends', a 4 disc set. Disc 3 is unbelieveable...Green Dolphin, Summertime, Corcovado....man, its killer. Another great one is We Get REquests. I also like O.P Plays the George Gershwin Songbook.

How bout Ella? The live in Berlin disc is awesome.

You like Gypsy at all? There's Django (of course), and the Rosenburg Trio is awesome.

How bout Latin Jazz? Can't go wrong with Tito Puente.

Grant Green is pretty solid if you're into guitar.

23. A few of my faves
An album called "Dizzy Atmosphere" which is made up of a bunch of Dizzy Gillespie alumni absolutely kicks ass. Swinging and hard blowing. I'll have to check to see sho's name it's under.

"Go" by Dexter Gordon. (Also "Our man in Paris")

Sarah Vaughn "sassy Swings the Tivoli" If you only buy one sarah album, this should be it. Incredible. Her take on "Mistie" is hilarious complete with fake bawling at the end.

MJQ-The two disc set called something like "Live in Lubiana, Yugoslavia" is a great place to start with this group. "Django" is good to, as is all the stuff Milt Jackson recorded with his own groups.

Tommy Flannagan "Lady be Good-For Ella" is remarkable. Excellent piano and excellent group. Also "Let's...play the music of Thad Jones" is a fine album.

28. You named some of my favorites
Miles Davis in particular.

Sun Ra is often overlooked because his later stuff is kinda inaccessible. But a good one from the fifties is "Jazz in Silhouette". It is very listenable. I bought it unheard and was amazed that it isn't on more lists.

Charles Mingus is also very good. I like "Mingus Ah Um" and "Mingus Dynasty". Also "Changes One".

There's also some good Eric Dolphy on "Out to Lunch".

Ahmad Jamal is really good. And you can still see him live.
And Bud Powell. Amazing stuff.

Have you ever heard "Jazz at Massey Hall"? The lineup: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell, and Max Roach.
It was originally a double album, titled "The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever". First album, the complete lineup: second album Mingus, Powell and Roach. Now one CD, "Jazz at Massey Hall" with just the complete lineup, but the whole show is excellent.

Happy Listening! :hi:

is the single most spiritual work of art I've ever experienced. I love that A side. I've worn out several LPs, its out of print, and I tried to find a library recording: there are seven copies in libraries in the U.S., and none for loan.

The only MP3 I ever downloaded off the Internet (not feeling guilty, as I owned several unplayable copies (good pressing destroyed in fire; all subsequent bought here and there in terrible shape).
