I went to a used book sale today
I made an incredible find for $5.
It's a book titled "Germany, the Olympic Year 1936". It was printed in Germany for tourists in 1936. In great condition. Cover is nice and clean, a little foxing on the endpapers. Crisp, clean pages. It's in English, a 1st edition.
Nothing but propaganda for Hitler.
There's one page of a sculptor carving a bust of Hitler with the title, "Artistic, creative work expressive of the new national spirit".
I wonder what it's worth?

3. Check with some rare book dealers over the Web
and in your town f you're near some. They can probably give you a good idea.

A friend of mine had me translate a book for him about 5 years ago. It was published in Germany during the early part of Der Fuehrer's reign, and was all rosy, glowing info about his beginnings, his glorious war record, and his unfair imprisonment. It was bizarre.

4. Quite a bit. People will pay top dollar for
Third Reich paraphernalia. German printing with English text makes it very valuable. Take it from a Reich collector - hang on to that.

That is of course unless you don't want to sell it to me.;)

5. Not only that
but it's a crossover collectible too-the '36 Olympics being notorious.
I may need the $$.

7. Yep. Jesse Owens stuck it to whitey.
And whitey don't get much more white than Hitler.

6. About 50 bucks
Edited on Thu Apr-29-04 04:28 PM by Waistdeep
Barnes and Noble has an out of print section on their website. The current prices are $50 - $75
Look here: http://tinyurl.com/25zqz

On edit:
Yours looks like it's in better condition than those listed, so it's definitely worth more.

10. abebooks.com
Hi BlackVelvetElvis,

The best way to determine the value of your book would be to check Abebooks.com.

I am an old antiques dealer, although, I gotta say, for the sake of accuracy, that even though I've dealt a few books, they are not my best subject.

Condition is SO important in the world of books that I cannot overstate it.

OK, here are some results for you.
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?&imageField.y=17&imageField.x=35&ph=2&cmid=hp-search-form&tn=%22Germany,+the+Olympic+Year+1936%22&sts=t

$24 to $75 represents the RESALE value. That means that unless you are a bookseller by trade, you may well expect half of that amount.

eBay had changed this dynamic somewhat, however. You can probably make a profit selling it on eBay, as long as you didn't pay too much. ;)

Personally I have always given a wide berth to Nazi shit. No condemnation, mi amigo, it's just that that stuff gives me the creeps. ;)

11. Thanks
It is creepy but very interesting, I couldn't pass it up. I couldn't believe the 15 or so used book dealers in line ahead of me didn't see it.

14. those books guys

ARE SHARKS!

I'm happy you got there ahead of them.

Not that I dislike book dealers so much, don't get me wrong, it's just that I have been to SO many sales and I never got a chance at the books because they were THERE scrafing up every good book in sight. LOL.

I'll bet you can get 50-75 on eBay for it.

15. One eldery man in line ahead of me told a me a story
He went to a used book sale in Gastonia, NC and the fire marshall was at the door. He only let in 30 at a time. The dealers were in line first and they not only got to go in first (no problem with that) but they got to leave the building and return to load up before anyone else entered.
I bet some money exchanged hands!

That's just normal. No money changes hands. It's just that the dealers are regular customers. Those selling off estates depend on them.

(edited for spelling)

18. many book dealers are specialized
they won't touch certain things. Some folks will only deal in Children's stuff. When I sold books I wouldn't mess with kid books.

If you don't specialize its too easy to get burned. I know nothing about kids books and have no desire to learn. Other folks avoid modern fiction like the plague, I loved it and did well with it.

Some folks would avoid a Nazi book strictly because of content and wouldn't want it in their store. Some simply wouldn't know for sure if it were valuable or not and not want to risk it - its a reasonably obscure title. In this case I am guessing no one else saw it, though.

19. Modern Firsts
Hi lunabush,

I thought I would ask, just in case.

Do you happen to know the name of that book on modern first editions?
I had it in my notes but have somehow lost it.

No big deal. It's been bugging me though. It was a really good reference book.

20. Any of the various books by the Ahreans
Allen & Patricia Ahearn - Book Collecting 2000 is a great reference and tells me everything I need to know, but one should get their latest, which last I knew was 2002 and slightly differently titled.

Might also look at the Zempel book, First Editions - Identification. Another great reference.

The most comprehensive would be Firsts, Collecting Modern First Editions, which is a periodical.

Enjoy! Great hobby - though can be maddening.
