Poll question: The Best Way to Lose Weight is to...
There are many of course, but if you had to choose ONE...

1. Do the first two!
Number 4 works, but it may be bad for your overall health.

4. Eating healthier and watching calories and fat worked for me.
I added exercise after I had already dropped some tonnage. So, eating right is best.

10. I disagree that diet is more important than exercise.
Covert Bailey has an excellent book, Fit or Fat, which has been helpful to me. While he does suggest limiting fat intake, he says that exercise is the only thing that can make a person fit, and in my experience he was right. Like you said earlier, the best thing to do is exercise AND eat healthy, but if I were forced to choose one, I think exercise is more important.

25. OK, exercise, then.
I'm not saying that you can eat total shit and lose weight, but if you eat the same ammount of Golden Arches, but expend about 6,000 calories a week in exercise, you'll still lose weight (provided you are presently gaining less than 2# a week)

5. Different for each individual,
just like medications. You all knew this, right?
For example, carb restriction doesn't do much for me; calorie restriction does, and exercise helps. But that's me. you're you (and other such words of wisdom).

6. Move to a foreign country. The more backward, the more weight
you'll loose. Only in America do we have food in the grocery stores that has no taste; restaurants that serve triple portions; and a population that has to schedule exercise in their busy schedule. Every time I go overseas I loose a lot of weight. The food is good. I have to walk everywhere or see nothing.

7. Strength and Cardio fitness training
which will reduce fat and increase lean body mass ... which will increase your basal metabolic rate ....

BTW: we (my wife, my children and myself) are opening a women's gym in SW Missouri ... It will be like Curves, but with real fitness equipment ... I would consider telling long time DUers where it is, if interested in joining ...

It's scary and exciting .....

9. Root canal. "The Dental Diet."
Hurts a bit, but you get the painkillers. No desire to eat. The pounds just fall off.

12. Other: tonsillectomy.
A little bit more drastic than the dental diet, but worth it.

But you have to be an adult when you have your tonsils out for it to count as a dietary aid. AFAIK, elementary-age children aren't saying to their peers, "You look fantastic! What did you do, have your tonsils out?"

Besides, when you're an adult, the pain meds are yummy.

15. When you get dumped and are so upset,
you can't eat. Although some people when they are upset eat too much, so it really depends.

14. Exercise and eating right are both important.
The combination of the two will make you lose weight much faster than either one alone.

19. You have to both eat right and exercise...
otherwise, if you kept a crappy diet and exercised, you wouldn't be burning away the excess calories/fat in your body...just the crap you ate.

Let me put this in perspective: If you were to run on a treadmill for a half an hour, you would burn a little over 300 calories. That's equivalent to about two cans of pop. If you had two cans of pop that day, you'd be burning those calories and not the excess calories stored in your body.

You can't have one without the other, IMO.

20. Not entirely correct
Exercising increases your metabolism. Once you start exercising you burn more calories even just sitting around than you did before.

That said, I agree with your basic point. You gotta eat right to make sure you get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs without taking in too many calories. And you have to exercise to keep your matabolism up and to strengthen and tone your body.

23. Find what foods work for you
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 11:35 AM by supernova
and whether you not you have any food allergies or anything like metabolic syndrome that would keep you heavy because you're eating foods you don't digest well. Remove those things from your eating plan. These foods will be different for everybody. For me it happens to be things made from flour: pasta, breads, crackers, cakes, cookies, etc.

Portion control.

You can only absorb about 20-25 grams of protein at a time. The rest will go to fat stores (Dr. Perricone)

- I wish I could find similar factlets for carbs such as veggies and pastas.

Eat low glycemic (low sugar) fruits and veggies and watch the portions. It varies, but the rule of thmb is a 1/2 C cooked and 1 C raw is considered a single serving. Eat vivid colors. More vitamins, nutrients, and anti-oxidants in vividly colored fruits and veggies.

Get some exercise every day. Walk. Lift weights. Play ball. Garden. Whatever, just move your body. We're built for movement not sitting still.

If you need a snack, eat some nuts or cheese.

edit: use mono and poly-unsaturated oils in cooking and in salad dressings.

And I 2nd, 3rd, and 4th the suggestion to not eat past about 6-7pm.

27. I lost 15 pounds when I was in the hospital.
I was mostly confined to bed. I lost the weight because the food was terrible, and there was nothing to eat after 5 pm.
