I watched "Nightline," and still haven't stopped shedding tears.
What hit me the hardest was that only a few of the soldiers named were older than me (I'm 38)!

It also didn't help that they kept interrupting the show for fuckin' commercials. I know that's how ABC makes its money, but there was something fundamentally wrong with interrupting the recitation of a list of our war dead to broadcast upbeats ads for cars and toothpaste.

Ted Koppel's closing remarks were fairly sickening, too. He essentially accused those on both sides of the Iraq war issue of cynically using our dead troops for political gain. Of course, Koppel never said a word about the Bush Junta doing the same goddamned thing. Heaven forbid he should offend the GOP suits at Sinclair Media!

1. I didn't watch it, because I knew I would be filled with rage
But I figured they would've done it sans commercials. I'm disappointed to hear otherwise.

(BTW, we're the same age.)

3. I wasn't able to watch it because
neither the Nashville ABC nor the Huntsville Al ABC stations carried it. I don't think either is a Sinclair station, but what gives? Do you think they individually decided not to show it? This is just unbelievable. Maybe they are trying to be "fair and balanced."

4. I read another DU'er post earlier that the Huntsville station...
Is owned by a right-wing fundy. I don't know about Nashville. I was kind of surprised the Birmingham station showed it. (Actually, I did tune in for just a minute to see if they did.)

6. Thanks, I should have known that about Huntsville, but I am
really surprised about Nashville. Guess it is a fundy-owned station also.

7. I keep wondering who was less respectful this week
Rene Gonzalez the UMass graduate student who spoke in unflattering terms of a fallen soldier.

or

Sinclair Broadcasting who chose to sweep under the rug the names and faces of 700 plus of our service men and women tonight.

My insomnia can rear its ugly head at the drop of a hat. After watching Nightline tonight I know this is certainly going to be one of those nights. It's troubling to think of these good paople gone for what I think is an unacceptable reason.

8. Definitely Sinclair!
The kid who wrote that opinion piece was just that--a kid, who still has his whole life in front of him to hopefully develop some sensitivity and tact.

Sinclair Media, on the other hand, is just another money-grubbing cutthroat corporation with strong ties to the GOP. Fuck Sinclair Media and the deregulation bill it rode in on! :grr::nuke:

2. It made me really angry to see...
people the same age as me (22) dead because of a war that we didn't need to fight.

The blood is on Dubya's hands. He's to blame for all the deaths of every one of those soldiers.

5. Yes. That was such a powerful show.
I couldn't help but watch it. Seeing graduation photos of young people, and the one of the guy kissing the baby--whew! A friend of mine almost re-enlisted several months before this shit started; fortunately, there were problems with the Army acting on it and he didn't do it. I thank God for that every day. As I looked at the photos, I couldn't help thinking that I could have been looking at his picture. The whole show was just so sad.

12. ya think that, between Nightline and the torture pics . . .
people in this country might start to wake up and smell the shit emanating from 1600 Pennsylvania? . . . I hope so, if only so all this death and horror can lead to something constructive (and thereby be maybe a little less meaningless) . . . I'm just disgusted with it all . . .

13. I haven't been able to type any coherent thoughts about it.
I'm looking for a word that captures the lunacy of this day: torture photos, Sinclair Broadcasting boycotts Nightline, pResident * in all his incompetent arrogance...

Isn't there a word that describes a monumental senseless abuse?

I'm just filled with a thick stillness that seems foreign and unnatural -- not uncomfortable or distressing -- just an unfamiliar numbness. Apparently, it's just not a night for words. Hopefully someone else here can more fully capture "it".

15. You know...
what get's me about the whole thing...I'm sure that the general public wouldn't have known about it until that company made a big stink about it...now I'm sure that many, many, many people watched it and I hope it sunk in what this misadministration has done...
