Essentially they schmooze money out of people.

8. They're like the Field Marshals of film

though some are every much hands-on and, in some cases, some even basically do much of the director's job (in some genres there are no directors and the producer does it all. Typically, though, they deal with the big-picture (no pun intended) stuff, as already posted.
