Do you have a favorite wrestler from when you were a kid?
Mine was Hercules Cortez!

I remember watching him every weekend. I think it was one of my first crushes but can't swear to it. He just looked so ...godlike... to me.

Then I heard he was killed in a car crash. I don't think I ever watched wrestling again after that.

(And don't even get me started on "The Crusher"...annoying!)

2. I used to watch...
every Saturday for "The Road Warriors"...I just thought they were the shit...!
The way they talked was a riot...and they seemed so brutal in the ring...but as usual...all good things come to an end...I don't even watch wrestling any more...to showy...

3. My family used to watch Wrestling at the Chase
every Sunday morning. I recall there was a family of wrestlers, each of whom has met an early demise. I think they were twins.

I stopped watching wrestling in the 1980s when it became a collection of horrible stereotypes meant to foster nationalism. LOATHED Hulk Hogan and the whole Hulkamania garbage. Feh!

4. Probably have to be the Undertaker
Nice and dark and evil.

And he's come back to the WWE!!

But I don't really care for it. Bit too showy and a bit too patriotic.

5. My father and sister laughed like crazy with a guy called George.
TV was new then so it had to be in the late 40's. I did not like the sport.

Edited on Sun May-02-04 09:24 AM by BiggJawn
1915-1963. His gimmick was a "fem" schtick with long blond hair, entrance music, Mikey Jackson-style entourage, the works.

And this was in the late '40's.....
all that stuff is standard drill for WWF-WWE-WWLSMFT-types now...

6. Yukon Erik......
...that dates me I know, but as a young boy I thought Yukon Erik was the strongest man alive. My dad was a great fan of live arena wrestling and used to take me to the matches once a month. He liked Yukon Erik because in my dad's words, "Yukon Erik was a clean wrestler", meaning he fought by the rules. I think I liked Yukon Erik because my dad liked him and for no other reason, because as I got older, I had no desire to watch wrestling. So I stopped following it. I have no idea what ever happened to Yukon Erik.

7. Sailor Art Thomas
It was one of those regional wrestling shows from the early 70's.

He was this magnificent looking wrestler. Older, but a big, powerful man. I had these fantasies about him. I must have been all of 20 or so.

10. Bruno Sammartino!
Growing up in Pittsburgh during the late 50's & early 60's I enjoyed the local wresting shows on TV. Bruno was an incredibly strong man and was a real blue-collar type hero.

My favorite memory of Bruno was a match between him and Gorilla Monsoon.
In those days, Gorilla weighed over 300 lbs and, during the match, Bruno picked Monsoon up over his head in a full press and tossed him across the ring. I was impressed!

Wrestling was pretty fake even in those days, but it was somehow more fun.

Bruno is alive and well here in Pittsburgh, and he shows up often in various local TV ads.

and Jumpin' Johnny Defazio.

My grandparents loved to watch Studio Wrestling. They would yell things in Slovak, that translated meant "Break his back!", "Tear his hair out!", "Beat him up!"

They thought it was real. One time my Uncle told them it was an act and my Grandpa hit him!

28. "The Nature Boy" Rick Flair
He's been "stylin' and profilin' for almost 30 years now. Flair redefined the studio mike rant. Name a period of time and he was like reports about Lee Ermy. One endless stream of insults about his opponent for as long as he needed to rant without ever saying the same line twice (except these were all broadcastable in the Deep South).

Flair has also been one of the most wealthy pro athletes for that whole period of time. 60 Minutes interviewed him in the late 70's. You know why he's been using the "riding Space Mountain" line so long? Flair invested in land in the Orlando area before Disney World got built. Made a freaking fortune off it.

Basically, his bit was jumping up and kicking people in the chest. At least that's about all I recall, but he was one of the "good guy" wrasslers of the day.

My uncle took us to a neighbor's house to see his new television. I was about six years old at the time. Don Eagle was one of the wrestlers. That was my first and last experience with wrestlers.

http://www.wrestlingmuseum.com/pages/bios/halloffame/bruiserbio.html

I don't think he was my favorite but he was one of the most memorable. The guy was flat crazy when he was in his wrestling personna and was tabbed one of the bad guys.

It turns out from a friend of mine that it was all an act (surprise! surprise!). When Dick the Bruiser was home he was quite a different guy, helping neighborhood kids with baseball and football and would help neighbors with car troubles and the like.
