Sweet Child O' Mine voted the greatest guitar riff
Not my own personal favourite, but there ya go!

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3677965.stm?display=1

Guns N' Roses' anthem Sweet Child O' Mine has the greatest guitar riff ever, according to a poll in a music monthly. Total Guitar magazine's readers put it in top place, ahead of Nirvana's grunge anthem Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love came third, followed by Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water.

Total Guitar editor Scott Rowley said: "To a new generation of guitarists, Guns N' Roses are more thrilling than the Sex Pistols."

The top 20 riffs:

1. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
3. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
4. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
5. Enter Sandman - Metallica
6. Layla - Derek & The Dominoes/Eric Clapton
7. Master Of Puppets - Metallica
8. Back In Black - AC/DC
9. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix
10. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
11. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
12. All Right Now - Free
13. Plug In Baby - Muse
14. Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
15. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Van Halen
16. Walk This Way - Aerosmith w Run DMC
17. Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
18. No-One Knows - Queens Of The Stone Age
19. Paradise City - Guns N' Roses
20. Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine

3. Ugh, what, did they poll the trailer park?
Everyone knows "Kashmir" is the best guitar riff ever, if you can really rank these things :-)

6. My own personal favourite riff...
...is Dark are the Veils by Candlemass, which just about nobody else has ever heard of!

Beside that I'm quite partial to a bit of Refuse/Resist by Sepultura, my mobile phone ringtone is Black Night and I'm glad to see Muse in that top 20. It's all a matter of personal taste really.

8. No way
I demand a recount. What, they compiled this list using Diebold style voting? Two Guns N' Roses songs in the top twenty??????? Give me that Voodoo Child (either by Jimmy or SRV)

24. 2000 readers...
of Total Guitar magazine. That's who voted for this list. What worries me is that Sweet Child O'Mine is top of the BBC poll in the story too!

Perhaps we should do a DU poll on the subject instead!

14. Ugh. Some people have no taste in music.
I mean, come on...how is Jimi Hendrix number nine and Guns N' Roses is number one? Even those Old Greedy Balding Bastards, er, I mean Metallica, is number five and seven. :puke: God, help us all.

16. Is Randy Rhodes on their twice? And where is Free Bird?
If I remember correctly, Randy Rhodes is on the list twice? He was on Crazy Train, right? Not Hendrix, not Clapton, not Van Halen. Just Rhodes.

18. Where's The Spirit of Radio by Rush?
Or, more importantly, where is the Who's Baba O'Riley? Or Stairway to Heaven? Heaven Can Wait by Iron Maiden is also beautiful--although that's a stretch for this list; the best lick in Heaven Can Wait is a Steve Harris bass line.

Hell, you could fill the whole list with Who, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Rush licks. But I agree with Smoke on the Water and Crazy Train, they are great licks.
