Another Mommy Dream dashed against the rocks of teenage angst....
Edited on Sun May-02-04 12:34 PM by MrsGrumpy
We always told my daughter that when she turned 12 she could get her ears pierced. She turned 12 two years ago...When I took her to get the deed done (you know, one of the sappy, estrogen soaked moments) she turned to me and said, " I really don't want holes in my head that weren't put there by nature." ...and I was proud. Even though I got caught up in the whole "My little girl is becoming a woman" moment for a second there....

Today, I get a phone call. She had spent the night at her best friend's house. It's her best friend. "Can we get Nicole's ears pierced?" (mind you best friend's mom is there-I don't let Nicole go to the mall by herself) I wanted to shout,"NO NO NO---that's my thing--I'm the MOM!!" instead,"Does Nicole want to get her ears pierced?" Answer=yes. So, okay, get the darned ears pierced.

And here I sit, alone with my hormones....SOB!!!

1. I'm confused...
don't you have to have written permission for anyone under 18 to have a piercing in your state? I had to actually appear with my daughter or nobody would do it!

5. I don't know. The last time I was there it was when I myself was 12.
I don't think so, because I do know of many girls who have just gone with friends to do it.

2. It could be worse
She could have come home after spending the night at a friend's house and told you that they pierced her ears when they were drunk the night before.

(A VERY common experience...trust me.)

6. True, true...
I'm still kind of bummed about it. But you are right, it could be a lot worse. :hi:

3. I know what that's like!
My brother-in-law took my son to see the last Star Wars movie because he couldn't wait for me to have a day off. He told me, "We can go see it again next week." I don't be thinking so, Buddy! I pouted inside for weeks.

7. Shame, shame on him. That's horrid.
Some things are just a parent's domain, that's one of them.

My dad did that with Harry Potter and I was a bit put out. :hi:

4. We did it with apples in college.
The next time I went home, my father was appalled...he said something about me being uncivilized...then, at Christmas he gave me a pair of pearl studs...40 years later I still wear then all the time and think of him.

Will wanted to do this in high school. I figured that no matter what I said, he was going to do it anyway...and I remembered the barbaric apple technique...so I said Ok as long as you go to someone legit to do it and you don't puncture any other part of your body. It was a "deal" and he's kept it!

Mrs. Grump...I never had girls so I don't know the challenges you face, but try to relax...somehow they all manage to survive their youth!

8. Thanks Raven! Girls are really something. One day a blast to be around,
the next...I'm looking for a hiding spot. We have a boy bringing up the rear and I cannot wait to see what he comes up with.

FWIW, I think you've done a fine job as a mom! :hi:

14. My son just turned 13 last Monday and,
after taking him to see the movie "Mean Girls" yesterday (which brought back a lot of nasty, unpleasant high school memories, btw) I amd DAMN GLAD he's a boy, not a girl, lol!

Hang in there, MrsG, and buckle up tight for the next four years!!!!

10. My sister-in-law 'secretly' took my daughter to get her ears
pierced while she was visiting with them one summer, and I was not against the idea, just wanted to be there too,...... :grr:

I was really pissed about it, so I know what you are feeling about this, Laura!

years ago, when my now 17 year old daughter was only 5, my ex-husband's girlfriend took her to get her hair cut short, just like hers....I thought I would have a cow!

12. The other side of that coin:
My oldest son, when he was in the 8th grade, got his ear pierced while on a custodial visit with his father. And hid it from me when he got home late Sunday night; I'm not sure how. I found out the next day. You see, he went to school at the same school I worked at; I was the librarian at the time, and the whole school knew me. So I'm walking by the cafeteria at lunch time, and he is in line with his class. The other boys in his class call me over. "Hey, mom, what do you think of _____'s new ear?" Pointing out the earring. With glee. My son is furious; betrayed by his friends, caught publicly by his mom. I smiled and held my hand out. He took the earring off and dropped it into my hand. I said kindly, "You can have it back when you turn 18."

I didn't want my boys to pierce themselves; I thought I'd brought them into the world perfect the way they were. I still feel that way. At 24 and 26, they've peirced. Thankfully, that older boy quit wearing the tongue stud after the novelty wore off. They both have pretty much stuck to ears, although the younger keeps trying an eyebrow thing; it's always getting infected.
