3. Yes. Mahogany grained Formica is un-natural.
Think faux Danish Modern.
Anybody remember that?

4. It is often nothing more than a veneer
A disguise for the baser wood that lies beneath.

25. Poly? I hate poly!
If you want wood-colored plastic, I can get you that pretty easy.

If you want wood-colored wood, either learn to French polish, stick with tung oil and Briwax paste wax, or use non-poly varnish.

My favorite witches' brew: put three coats of tung oil on the wood. Sand with 440-grit wet & dry sandpaper after each coat while it's still wet. After the third coat, give it a couple of days to dry, then come in with a mix containing one part mineral spirits, one part tung oil and one part alkyd varnish. Wipe this on with a cheesecloth rubber, then let it sit for a day. Sand with 600-grit sandpaper and do it again. Give it three days to dry, then start applying slightly thinned alkyd varnish. About three coats will do. Give one day between coats. After the third coat, give it a month to dry and wax it with Briwax.
