"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love & be loved in return."
Oh my god! I am so embarrassed to admit that I'm only JUST NOW discovering "Moulin Rouge". I am positively in love with this movie.

What a wonderful movie! How inspiring! How fun! How funny! How sad!

It's just so fantastic... the dancing, the costumes, the sets, the special effects, the story... and the music, the music, the music! It's got everything, a beautiful heroine, a lovable mild mannered hero, a villain, comic relief, excitement, love, and tragedy.

If you haven't seen it, and if you like musicals... then this movie is for you. Despite the sad ending (which we know will be sad from the very first scene so I'm not giving anything away) it's a movie that I'll watch many times, and I'm glad it's in my collection.

P.S. What do you think it was that Satine died from?

8. Yup, but...to be "timely"
Let's call it consumption. (a la Jane Eyre.)

BTW-- arwalden...I've notified the glitterball chamber. They're sending out the men to recall your membership card.

Please don't create a scene (at least one that "out-scenes" the glitterball chamber when they heard you'd just discovered Moulin Rouge)}(

2. I love this movie!!
OK, first, Satine had TB.

When this film was out in theaters I had zero interest in it. My daughter insisted on renting the DVD a couple of years ago (she's 13) after watching it at a friend's house. She loved it so much she forced me to watch it.

It knocked my freaking socks off!!!

We own the DVD and the sound track.

It's an absolute gem.

Have you seen any of Baz Luhrmann's other movies? Check out "Simply Ballroom." It's terrific as well.

4. That is such a GREAT movie!
Edited on Mon May-03-04 09:56 PM by BattyDem
I had no interest in it, but I caught it on cable one night when I couldn't sleep. For the first 20 minutes, I was sitting there thinking "WTF is this?" but I stuck with it and I got completely hooked!

On edit: I forgot to answer your question. I think Satine had Tuberculosis.

6. Satine died from
Consumption, i.e. TB. The bloody hankie was the giveaway.

It is sad, but also very fun and vivid, almost lurid. I love the Art Nouveau feel of it.

7. In one of his essays, the author Lewis Lapham says that
there are only two things important in life. The first is work that provides outlet for our creative enrgies; the second is love that
provides meaning to this work. I have thought this statement just about sums it up.Your enthusiasm for Moulin Rouge made me think about this.Thank you.

I've felt so all alone in my adoration of this movie *Big grin*

And I have to second the poster above who mentioned Simply Ballroom. It's a great one, too....

So, your opinion - which version of Roxanne do you prefer: the original Police, or Tango de Roxanne?

Pcat (who is putting the dvd in even as we speak)

18. That's easy, I hated the Police version from the first to the last time I
heard it.

Really odd film. Very intoxicating. I watched it simply because I'm in love with Nicole Kidman and have worshipped everything else Baz Lurhman has done (okay, only two other films, but it's still worship).

For the record, I hate and loathe musicals. Except this one.

Strictly Ballroom will blow you away if you've never seen it. It's on my top five, easily. Romeo & Juliet is high energy, with parts that drag, or worse, fail, but the highs make up for it. Harold Perrineau's "Pox" speech is the best version of it I've ever seen. (Man, does that guy need more roles. He's one of those actors right on the edge of being discovered, I think, like Kevin Spacey or Don Cheadle were right before they were discovered.)

The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love & be loved in return.

Oops just saw that you had to make it fit!

When I was watching it a few weeks ago, one of the RA's walked in (she's a performing arts major) and started talking with us about how its post-modern because it includes all these bits and pieces from all these different periods. The music is modern, but spliced. It was neat.
