Off-duty Scottsdale police officer Kevin Baxter refused to pull over when his passenger asked him what he hit on U.S. 60 in Mesa, according to court records released Monday.
He’d hit Doug Matteson, an off-duty Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputy on a motorcycle, about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, police said. Matteson, whose leg had to be amputated, was thrown about 60 feet across the concrete. He pulled himself by his arms across three lanes of the freeway to avoid an oncoming truck, then lost consciousness.
According to Maricopa County Superior Court documents, the passenger in Baxter’s green Ford Mustang GT told police he was passed out in the passenger’s seat when he heard a loud crash and felt an air bag deploy and a tire fall flat.
He asked Baxter what he had hit. Baxter responded, “I don't know.” Then the passenger told Baxter to stop and see. “He didn’t stop,” the passenger said.
