1. Big fat slow targets.
Only good for long range reconnaissance where there was no bad weather. Another one actually did survive. What was her name?

2. USS Los Angeles.

Los Angeles got caught in a high wind situation while moored. It survived, and was scrapped in '39.

5. The Shanendoah and another Airship
were lost in storms.
They would have made great ASW platforms for submarine patrols, as did the later blimps.

8. Two ships...
Both Akron and Macon, the "flying aircraft carriers" were lost in storms.

10. Admiral Rosenthal Collection
Used to be at the University of Texas at Dallas. Is it still? I hope I spelled his name right. He was a big LTA man in the Navy. I think Admiral Moffat was killed in one of those death traps.

11. The Shenandoah ( ZR-1 )
Was enroute to a state fair when she encountered a thunderstorm.
I don't remember the year, but i think it was in the late '20s.

But they were cool.

9. Not necessarily.....
If enemy aircraft could be detected early, those ships could launch their fighters.

3. Saw something a few years ago
about a heavy lift vehicle supposedly in development.
Kind of a combo helicopter/lighter-than-air ship for remote timbering, mining, etc.

Never heard another thing about it.

I have fantasized about a dirigible/blimp "cruise ship". Low and slow so you could really see the countryside. Weather remains a major problem.

6. Do you mean "Cargolifter"
Edited on Tue May-04-04 03:53 PM by Kellanved
The enterprise by the Zeppelin-heir.
Bancrupt.

They did never produce anything except PR-movies and a giant construction hall. Probably a scam from the start, but politicians are a little afraid to touch it.

7. I saw something like that...........
in Popular Science a long time ago. Talked about alleviating some of the trucking burden by using LTA transport. Sounds good if they can build a dependable airship.

4. lighter-than-air travel would be terrific
Not for military purposes, I'd imagine, but for leisure travel. Too bad the ships were so fragile; too bad weather is too powerful.
