and why is it written like that?

Several people use that and I just never have quite gotten it. So, I'm hoping for an explanation. Also, where did it originate?

1337 5p34k translates to "leet speak", (leet meaning "elite"). It a system of replacing letters with numbers and other characters that (mostly) kids use when they're messaging each other. I'm not exactly sure how it got started, but I suspect that it was a way to keep their parents from knowing what they were talking about. I'm much better at reading it that \/\/r171n6 1n 1337 5p34k, to be honest.

You've seen my license plate: BLU3J4Y. Same principle, but simplified.

I know you use it and I saw some other people here using it today and I wanted to be in on it too like all the other cool kids. :P

First: w00t became a popular interjection back in about 1996, when "Starsiege Tribes" was an extremely popular online-fps. It's a way of saying "Wahoo!" after a frag.

1337 sp34k was a trademark of some German hackers back in '99. It became popular through the game "counter strike," but is no longer used due to the large amount of script-kitties who used it. The idea behind 1337 sp34k was to replace letters with numbers and symbols in order to confuse people who intercepted emails which detailed net attacks.

P.s: Internet terms change everywhere, so there is no set 1337 language. Thus, anyone who tries to say there is a set meaning for a given word or phrase is a fool.

The bottom says edit: correctionzorz. Zorz is just added on to random words, for example 101z0rz and (to borrow a theme from the lounge) p00pz0rz.

By the way, to give a more specific answer to your question, from what I've seen w00t is generally used in the same way someone would say "what" as an exclamation. But better explanations have already been given, so just consider that another perspective.

If you ever have someone "w00t" you over the internet, I would recommend a response of something along the lines of "stfu g31ghw4d!!!11." They won't know w00t h1t th3m.
