Don't forget - Ray Harryhausen book signing and lecture Wed. night!
At the Lincoln Center Barnes and Nobles, NYC, 7 pm. WEd. May 5, 2004.

He's speaking, and signing his new book.

I just got the book yesterday - it's beautifully made, very well constructed, and wonderful to read!

What an incredible man he is.

I'm very much looking forward to it.

2. Well, I'd think he'd be out in LA or somewhere nearby
doing a lecture/signing at some point.

'course, i don't know where you are on the wrong coast, so LA could be as far as away as NYC if you're in Anchorage.

4. Too late...
From Billboard Books' website:

Special-effects guru and author Ray Harryhausen will appear in:
- Los Angeles; LA Times Book Festival April 24 at Royce Hall, UCLA campus, with Ray Bradbury
- Los Angeles; Comic Book & Science Fiction Convention April 25 (details to come)
- New York May 6 Lincoln Center Film Festival, Walter Reade Theater Film clip presentation, interview with Richard Pena, Director of the Festival, followed by a signing.

WHAH!!

Deep sigh.

Oh well. These things, they happen...

ps: I am just south of San Francisco, so it's about a 6 hour drive.

9. It was wonderful!
He's losing his focus when speaking, though - a lot of questions, he'd start to answer the question then go off on some other topic. Still, the straying was always far more interesting than him answering the sometimes pretentious questions.

Actually, now that I think of it, seems he only wandered on the pretnetious ones. Perhaps it was intentional... could be, could be...

Very genial, non-assuming, friendly man - quite impressive, really, as a human being.

AND - he gave a BIG thumbs up to Jackson remaking King Kong. He said that jackson is the ONLY person who would possibly do it right, keeping the fantasy element (and Harryhausen savaged de Laurentis for his King Kong), and perhaps even maintaining some of the innocence of the original. Though Ray also said that no one will ever top the original.

A good evening!

10. Thanks for the report, Rabrrrrrr
God, he must be close to 90 now.

OK, I was a bit trepidacious about remaking King Kong but if Ray says it's OK, then I'll believe it. :-)

12. Ray and his wife were flown, by Jackson, to NZ to see the models
a few years ago - before LOTR - when Jackson was first shopping around the idea for doing King Kong. Ray said he had an excellent ten days with Jackson, and that the models, back then, were glorious and incredibly well done.

11. I knew Jackson was going to do King Kong as soon
as I saw the first Lord of the Rings. Any Harryhausen afficionado could tell that those large slave apes were brilliant salutes to him and Kong.
