Modern rock is suffering - any recommendations?
Maybe I'm a Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Garbage, Green Day, Hole, and Nirvana snob - but I haven't bought a modern rock (used to be called alternative) album by a group in a while. Any group recommendations? I don't consider artists like Fountains of Wayne and The Jayhawks to be in this genre.

Free legal MP3 downloads from a ton of groups, most you've never heard of. If you're into "brand name" bands, this isn't the place. Although you'll find many of them represented, it is mainly a launch pad for new artists, and a vault for older out of print stuff. Worth a look. I've "discovered" several new groups I like just by surfing this site. If you don't like the dl, ditch it...it doesn't cost anything. (BTW, if you don't allow the site to set a cookie, you'll be limited to two free songs per session. Otherwise, dl all day long for free.)

BTW, I'm just curious...how can you be a "snob" for mainstream fm radio music? That sounds like being a snob for McNuggets or something. No offense, just wondering.

6. The Shins
I don't know really how to describe them. Of the ones you named above, they are most like Radiohead circa The Bends.

8. Queens of the Stone Age...
Great band. They're latest is "Songs for the Deaf" which is about 2 years old. I also recommend the Hellacopters and Fu Manchu, among others.

I've so far only heard a couple of tracks off it but what I've heard I liked.

16. No, but Ive been meaning to..
That "desert rock" scene is so prolific, I can't keep up, especially since Man's Ruin folded.
