And it's hurting my son terribly. Anyone ever had a hamster with lesions recover? She's on antibiotics and we are hoping for the best. She really is part of the family and my little boy is heartbroken.

This is very hard for my son (he lost his beloved grandpa almost exactly a year ago).

1. aww
that's sad.

I'm not sure how much hope I can give you... the little critters like hamsters are pretty delicate, and don't live long even under the best of circumstances. How old is the hamster?

Best be prepared for a trip to the pet store. Get a guinea pig - they live a lot longer and are more fun than hamsters :)

Best of luck!

2. Looks like that will be next--we had no idea about lifespan.
Thanks, and blonde, jr thanks you too.

4. yeah
hamsters only live about 2 to 3 years. Rats generally 3-5, but guinea pigs 8-12.

But who knows? Maybe your little guy will recover. I hope so.

3. Oh, I'm so sorry for you
How old is the hamster? I feel so bad for your son. Those little hamsters sure tug at the heartstrings.

I was lucky to have Brandy Alexander, my little striped hamster, for almost five years when I was a kid. He started to fail, and when my mother kindly took him to the hamster specialist (yes, there was one...), the doctor just looked at us and said, "This is the oldest hamster I've ever seen!"

We were devastated - we loved that little guy so much. It's been more than 20 years and I still get misty-eyed when I think of him. Never did get another rodent - he was our one and only.

Here's a big  for you and your family. You're a real sweetheart.
