What's my avatar?
Edited on Fri May-07-04 07:34 AM by WMass astronomer
Who knows what my avatar is?

Anyone else who has a non-obvious avatar can play too!

on edit: It should be a black-and-white circular thingy. Try 'reload' if it isn't.

Hint #1 This is the highest-resolution image anyone's ever taken of this particular object.

1. Not sure....
I even zoomed it, and can't really tell.... Could be a planet or the center of a storm.

8. So where did I get this then?

I know I just didn't imagine it... after all, I saved it, while reading this thread... and it doesn't look like Larry David to me. :)

It's interesting that the first time people come to this thread, they may see an avatar other than the one I'm currently using.

14. It's Pluto!
Gotta hit the road in a few minutes. Thank you for playing!

This is the Hubble telescope's view of Pluto, from sometime in the mid 90's.

16. I think mine is kind of non-obvious
As to its origin, anyway. There is probably a small core of people here who can identify what it is, though. Any takers?

20. No
It is indeed an eye. But I guess the point is to say where the image comes from and what it means.

Here's an obscure hint: there are things reflected in the eye.

24. I like it!
May I assume we belong to the same Family?

Ok, so no one else seems interested, so I'll explain. It's from the opening sequence of the film "Blade Runner," which is where the text in my sig comes from also. It (the eye) possibly but not definitely belonging to the main character played by Harrison Ford (it could also belong to Edward James Olmos' character). The eye is reflecting the cityscape of Los Angeles, 2016, from the air (in a police hovercar). The orange smear on the left is a reflected flame shooting out of a factory stack. Eyes play a huge symbolic role in the film, and it's my favorite film, thus my choice as avatar.

I love that film. I thought the orange was some sort of fire, but I couldn't get the other reflections.
