I've visited God Hates Fags.com and I felt dirty and ashamed for doing it. It's irrational hatred. And it can't be explained away by mental disorder. I genuinely feel that Phelps feels this way.

I've seen Fred up close, so to speak. He and his brood were at the Gay and Lesbian March on Washington in 1993. He's a twisted looking little man. You could see the hate in his face.

But, man it sure was nice to see that handful of hatemongers OVERRWHELMED by 1 million of us gay people. Oh, it was nice. :-)

There are some people who don't know who he is. Including some good people here. They should know about him. It's a good lesson in (admittedly extreme) homophobia.

The idiot I was refering to was O'Lielly. He is just plain stupid. Phelps is downright scary.

I'm straight, and I detest the man and his hate-mongering. I didn't know who he was til around 95 or so.

The AIDS quilt came to Dallas, and because of an insane work and school schedule I couldn't make it to go see it. So I picked up a copy of "And the Band Played On" instead to feel like I was educating myself and feeling the emotion behind it.

One of the guys I worked with saw me reading it, and although we hadn't talked much before that, we bonded immediately. He was gay and told me about Phelps, and the fact that he picketed Randy Shilts' funeral. I was so stunned I couldn't believe it.

I still can't believe that he has the GALL to add a "reverend" before his name.

Among other things, he says that, to avoid God's wrath, all countries have to make homosexuality a crime punishable BY DEATH. It's there at godhatesfags.

...I highly recommend you do a Google search on the words "addicted to hate." It will lead you to a nice little expose on the man, which was originally meant for print publication but never made it because Phelps' kids are all attorneys who have been able to intimidate WBC's opponents with the threat of lawsuits.

If that expose is even remotely accurate, Phelps' depravity goes way beyond "only" hating gays. He comes across as a textbook clinical psychopath, and homophobia and fundamentalism aren't the actual causes of his hate so much as they are simply the vehicles for it.

EDITED TO ADD: I have a suggestion to anyone who gets a visit from the Westboro Baptist Church, which consists entirely of Fred's extended family that he has terrorized into submission.

When they come around to your town, print out copies of "Addicted to Hate" and get 'em bound at Kinko's beforehand.

Then when they picket outside, engage in friendly conversation with individual members, preferably the kids and not the older members. When their parents aren't looking, try to persuade them to take a copy of "Addicted to Hate" and read it.

I couldn't read it all, it's truly, truly disturbing.

Good point. You should be more afraid of the wingnuts who write LTTE or online comments in response to news stories. Their hate may be comparatively less extreme than Phelps's, but it is much more dangerous because it's so ingrained in a large segment of our country's population and has too much of a role in guiding the direction of our country.

Fred Phelps is IMO a pretty isolated and extreme example of a deranged individual and I don't think he should be viewed as representative of the rank-and-file fundies. He and his cult should be fought, nonetheless, because a destructive psychopath who isn't representative of RW fundies is still a destructive psychopath.

It's not a huge stretch for me to believe the backround on Phelps' after reading this excellent article.

I think this should be forwarded to everyone who wants to know about him.
