1. Fascinating stuff, actually...
I picked up a book about the history of the Tube on my honeymoon a few years ago. Very interesting. There's a great website about the "hidden" Tube...abandoned stations and whatnot.

2. Waterloo station...
Edited on Fri May-07-04 04:07 PM by Teddy_Salad
is that the Northern , Jubilee or Bakerloo line?

Not my first look at London Underground.
I used to spend three and a half hours per day on it.

Boring but fascinating.

9. Yep
I was commuting from Cockfosters, the northern most point on the Piccadilly Line to Hammersmith and back every day.
It could take an hour and a half in the morning rush hour and a lot longer coming home.

That's why I love the subway here in New York, with it's express trains.
London Underground doesn't have that.

Frankly it sucks: they close the place down way too early. A decent subway system should operate close to 24h, at least on weekends.
</Berlin snob>

Great thread BTW - best copycat in a long time.

7. LOL!
Yes, they do close it down too early.

I used to work in Kings Cross and on friday nights, I would go out with my workmates for a few beers.

I'd get the Hammersmith and City line home, usually the last train at around midnight and I'd always fall asleep on it and this guy who was a cleaner at Hammersmith station would wake me up every week and unlock the gate for me to get out and walk home.

I did read that they were going to have a 24 hour a day trial run last year.
But I was there last October and it was still the same.
Last trains at midnight or thereabouts.

Sux, huh?

11. I hope they do!
24h sucks for the staff, but in the public sector it usually means more jobs. I don't know often I had to take a train way past midnight to get home, be it from a bar(no closing hour here) or from the University.
Of course everything seems to close too early in the UK ;-) . (except supermarkets)

Must have been an interesting time you had... the last train has always a special meaning - someone should do a new "night on earth", not with cabs, but on the last train in different subway systems.

13. Hey Kellanved
You are in Germany, huh?

I was in Munich ten or so years ago and was shocked at how clean the subway was there compared to here in the US and Britain.

And amazed at how punctual it was.

Truly amazing.

As in Washington D.C?

I haven't ventured to D.C yet but look forward to checking out the subway there when I eventually do.

... but still, it's easier to drive 7 miles to the Branch Ave Metro station than to drive into DC.

20. not so much in Berlin
Edited on Fri May-07-04 04:49 PM by Kellanved
The west German subways are usually from the 70s and 80s - rather small networks with modern tracks and stations.
The Berlin subway is old - punctual most of the time, but it more relies on a high frequency and many lines/stations.

Unlike the tube it is not deep underground - sometimes it is on elevated tracks, most times it is just a few meters under the ground. Many, if not most, trains are still GDR made, the older, Weimar and Imperial (and Reich), trains got only phased out in the past few years.
I'd say it is a little cleaner than the tube , certainly cleaner than the subway, but it is very unlike the West German systems - it has history .

28. It's actually the Stephansplatz stop.
As you exit, you come up outside Stephansdom (the church) and it towers over the plaza. It's really something to see.

15. S-Bahn are usually commuter trains
Using the Berlin naming convention (AFAIK it was first used in Berlin), U-Bahn is underground, S-Bahn are Commuter trains.

I've never been to Vienna (driving through, but that hardly counts), so I can't really say.

17. Straßenbahn
IIRC.

I liked it when I had time. It's much more leisurely ride through the city. Lots more elderly folks. I guess they felt more at home than on the U-Bahn.

16. Stephansplatz
It's a nice plaza.

I lived out at the very last stop on the green line, Hittzing.

What's the name of the street with all the fancy shops? I can't remember now.

I liked Schönbrünn. I loved walking in the garden.

31. DC's are very clean too. (Only...)
There are no public restrooms. I guess the homeless and the pervs and the prostitutes were abusing the privilege.

Seems like the escalators work only half the time. But it could just be that I tend to REMEMBER only the times they are out of order.
