How do you make Couch Covers?

I bought a couch from IKEA last night that's been discontinued and they don't sell covers for it anymore.

The couch was marked down from $1,000.00 to $120.00 bucks and I needed a couch so I bought it.

How do you make couch covers for a couch?

If anyone locates couch covers for the Stromstad 3-seat couch from IKEA please let me know.

Seriously, I would suppose you'd measure it, make a pattern, get fabric and cut to that pattern, and sew, sew, sew like the wind...

I'd forget about making the slipcover and buying one of the great and very well priced slipcovers at Surefit. They're really beautiful and they have almost every color and style you can imagine.

but I sure hope someone will help us out. I just did my first set of tab curtains and want to learn how to do couch covers and chair covers. I know we could always buy them but I don't see any covers that I like. How about you? I do have a sewing machine and it would be a good thing to learn. It seems a little overwhelming for me since I'm so new at the sewing thing.

:kick:ing it up for an answer!

4. Slip Covers

I am a great fan of the decorating shows on HGTV. They have several decorators who routinely make slip covers. My favorite is a lady on trading spaces who lays the material on the sofa or chair inside out and lines it up and pins it that way. Then she sews it and turns it right side out and it is ready to go.

6. I've done this before

with the assistance of my former mother in law, who was an extremely experienced seamstress....she always used the old cover as a pattern for the new.

The tough thing for me was the cording. Good luck!

rather than make one. I also watch the decorating shows, so you might try some of their websites. I think Trading Spaces has instructions. I also saw once, that one of the designers recommend a plastic rod behind the cushions to keep the cover in place.

pattern books. The only way I'd make one is if I was able to get the material cheaper than a good couch cover.

They should be around 99 cents, if you catch a sale. If you don't want one, you could just buy some fabric that you like and pin it together. Like the other posters said, you just pin and flip and sew and then flip again.

A cheap slipcover for a couch can be about sixty dollars. You can cut the price in half at the craft store. Plus, most manufactured slipcovers are hideous.
