As of today I'm the new owner of an 8 year old beagle, and I'm crying.
My grandfather had a pulmonary embolism this afternoon and passed away while in hospital recovering from hip surgery he had last week. I was already looking after his beagle Buddy since he was in the hospital, and he'd told me previously that if/when he couldn't look after Buddy anymore that he wanted me to have him, so I guess now I do.

My grandfather came of age during the Great Depression, enlisted and served as a tank driver in WW2, then worked a blue collar factory job, including extra shifts to help put my dad and uncle through university (and to keep them out of Vietnam).

He loved to fish. He REALLY loved to fish.

He hated *. He REALLY hated * and all the shit * and company have been doing to America.

He was a staunch Democrat all his life, largely because of having grown up in the Depression followed by the New Deal. My grandmother, his wife, had also been a staunch Democrat all her life until she passed away from cancer about a decade ago. They both made it a point to be active in grassroots democratic politics, such as voter registration drives, whenever they could.

He will be sorely missed.

Goodbye Grandpa. I'll take good care of Buddy for you.

2. Oh wonk...
I'm so sorry. It's a platitude, but you were very lucky to have known him. I was born with one grandmother, and she died when I was a child. I never knew a grandfather.

The greatest honor you can do him is to care for Buddy.

Again, I'm so sorry.

Edited on Tue May-11-04 05:59 AM by papau
He seems a bit younger than my Dad, but same values. I know hard it hurt when my Dad died.

I can only offer my sympathy - and pray that the Lord will comfort you.

Give Buddy a hug from me.
