3. someone educate me:
to me, the show just seems so incredibly derivative, with the funniest characters being almost clones of other characters:

the baby seems very reminicent of Dexter from Dexter's Lab (a top show when Family Guy was being developed)

The dog is an awful lot like Grommit from Wallace and Grommit. Or possibly Snoopy.

The Dad is pretty damn Homer-ific.

Am I just a total snob who should get over it? Educate me, what's so great about this show?

4. I'm in the dark, too
_Family Guy_ has one or two REALLY good laughs per show, then it tries too hard for the remainder. It seems desperate to show how ba-ad it is.

6. It's very funny, but then not everyone agrees on everything.
Personally, I don't care for Bob Marley or the Grateful Dead.

7. I'm with you on the dead, SLB, but Marley?
I don't listen much, but I sure respect him.

And where's my personal favorite DU image - the Loveless album cover? Those glorious sounds fill my head everytime I see one of your posts.

8. I think they turned the sig lines off.
As for Marley, familiarity breeds contempt, I guess. I prefer Peter Tosh, Horace Andy and dub.

9. ah, dub.
did William Gibson invent that too, or was he referencing something that already existed in "Neuromancer"? I can never tell with that guy.

10. You have to have watched a lot of tv
To get half the jokes in "The Family Guy". There are jokes about specific episodes of old tv shows. Hilarious if you get it.

Plus, it had the crudest humor on network tv, which I really like. So glad they're bringing it back. Just one of many great shows the incompetents at Fox cancelled because they put it into timeslots of death.

11. I get the references to old tv: referentiality
Really, I just find the program desperately crude, as if McFarlane is aiming to rile everybody's parents. There's little continuity from episode to episode so long as they're gunning for a laugh--so all of the sudden Peter and Lois are into S&M, for instance. Oh, dear.

Other crass sitcoms (like _South Park_ and even _Married. . . with Children_) make better continuing sense.

On the other hand, yes, Fox did dump this one much too early. There are a number of really good shows (I'll even include _Family Guy_ along with _The Critic_, _Andy Richter_, _Futurama_, and, it appears, _Arrested Development_) that would've made Fox's Sunday night a classic for the ages if the network hadn't been so prepared to ditch at the first sign of a sputtering engine.

5. Did you guys know...
...that the creator of the Family Guy (Seth Mcfarlane?) was supposed to be on one of the planes that hit the WTC?

I read that somewhere.....let me try and find it....
