Parents Complain - School PULLS Book Issued For Reading Assignment
Edited on Tue May-11-04 04:22 PM by matcom
<snip>

Fifteen-year-old Brandon Jerome was caught off guard by the sexual references in a book for his ninth-grade English class at Federal Way's Todd Beamer High School.

"'Here, you've got to read this,'" he told his mother, Lori Bridges, one day in March.

She read a passage about a virgin having sex. Making matters worse, she said, Brandon told her that a student drew an explicit picture of a boy and girl having sex as part of a class drawing exercise on the book. The drawing was displayed with others in the classroom.

The teacher, Vince Halloran, maintains that the book had been approved and none of the drawings was explicit.

But Bridges was incensed. She and five others complained to the Federal Way School Board, presenting petitions with 32 signatures to get the book removed from the district.

3. The book isn't 'banned' matcom, it's
been pulled from a required reading list for 9th graders but there's no current ban on providing the book for other students to read.

4. Ringggggg. Hello. This is the Cluephone Company. Is the editor there?
"...and none of the drawings was explicit."

WAS explicit?

Nice grammar. I wish I was as smart as the 'pointy-headed edumacated' editor of that paper.

Sheesh.

5. Actually
Usage Note: It is widely asserted that none is equivalent to no one, and hence requires a singular verb and singular pronoun: None of the prisoners was given his soup. It is true that none is etymologically derived from the Old English word n, “one,” but the word has been used as both a singular and a plural noun from Old English onward. The plural usage appears in the King James Bible as well as the works of John Dryden and Edmund Burke and is widespread in the works of respectable writers today. Of course, the singular usage is perfectly acceptable. The choice between a singular or plural verb depends on the desired effect. Both options are acceptable in this sentence: None of the conspirators has (or have) been brought to trial. When none is modified by almost, however, it is difficult to avoid treating the word as a plural: Almost none of the officials were (not was) interviewed by the committee. None can only be plural in its use in sentences such as None but his most loyal supporters believe (not believes) his story.

7. I treat it this way - take away the 'none' part of the sentence.
Then repeat it.

"... the drawings was explicit." Sounds wrong.

I realize that it may be "technically OK" by definition in dictionary.com, but if it doesn't pass my above test, it sounds wrong.

So there. Nonny nonny boo boo. :D

Just my $.02. Thanks for your input.

9. "Of" is a preposition making "of the drawings" a prepositional phrase...
The prepositional phrase has no bearing on the verb's singular or plural status...
