Windows 98SE Help!!
Can someone please tell me how to disable the stupid "Desktop Themes"? I even deleted every theme in th folder, but I still have a stupid ram-hogging tiny Windows flag flapping on my pointer.

AAAAGGGHH! How can I get back to the plain old non-novelty windows pointer arrow?!

Right click on your desktop, properties, apperance, scheme, choose "windows standard"

3. I'm not sure if I can help, but I'll try.
Have you tried
Start <in lower left corner>; Settings; control panel; mouse

Then on the Mouse window, go to the pointer window and select a scheme? "Hourglass" is rather generic.

4. Noises, flags, it's the freakin' 4th of July!
Not it's making all kinds of sond effects with the opening and closing of actual windows. I just want it all to stop!!

Sorry bud- but its time to upgrade that shiite !!

Meanwhile... try Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add\Remove Programs

Click on left hand side "Add\Remove Windows Components"

Find Desktop Themes and uninstall the whole themes package. Might be under "accessories" or some such... like I said- Its been a long time since I tinkered with the 98...

6. Do This!
Click:

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows Setup...

Take the checkmark out of "Desktop Themes." Click "OK"

That should do it, if you still have problems try this:

Right-Click on your Desktop. From the Pop-Up menu, point to "Active Desktop." Three options should show up on a menu. If "View As A Webpage" has a check mark next to it, the option is enabled. Click the check mark to disable the Active Desktop option, and the Desktop should revert to a standard Windows format.

If THAT doesn't work, you probably have some third party software installed. Identify it, and uninstall it through the Control Panel's Add-Remove Programs icon.

7. While the other suggestions are all good...
Let me make one that should enhance your win98 esperience alot....


Go to...


Start -> Run


Type: msconfig

then 'enter'


In window that comes up, choose "Selective Startup" and then go to the "Startup" tab and uncheck anything you aren't sure what it is. I would recomend googling anything you aren't sure about to find out what it is.

Most people have way too many things running at startup and this will eliminate most of them.

List of startup programs and whether you need them or not. For Dell systems, but useful for us non-Dell folks, too.
