Why do people hate hearing their own voices?
I know most people can't stand to hear themselves on video or audio tape (me included).. I've always wondered why that is.

Is it because the tape just makes it sound different? or is it because when you speak you hear yourself through bone and through your own head? or maybe folks are really self-conscientious?

What do you think? Maybe everybody just sounds like a moron and nobody knows it yet. :)

1. Well..
I've heard it sounds different from what they hear in their head. I think its because the sound travels through fluid in your head and it distorts the way you hear it.

5. But you're not actually "talking" in your head..
my inner monologue voice sounds much softer than it does when I actually open my mouth and talk.
My actually voice sounds much louder and brasher than I like to think it does.

6. I wonder WHY it sounds different to yourself though?
Anytime I hear myself on audio/video I cringe, even with anyone else saying I sound fine. Hmmm.

7. Its because of

what the person above said- when you talk to others, you are hearing yourself through not only your own head but through the air, back through your ears, and into your own head again. When you talk, you achieve perfect acoustics to hear yourself, simply because you are the one generating the noise, and it passes through your head multiple times.

Not so on tape. When you hear yourself on tape, the sound is only passing from the speaker (which can't reproduce your voice like your larynx can), through the air, and into your ears. What you're missing is the natural resonance of your own voice through your own tissues. That's why it sounds odd.

As for why so many people can't seem to stand hearing themselves on tape- myself included- it might have something to do with one's 'aural self-image'- that is, what you think you ought to sound like. When that changes, it's jarring, to say the least.

8. I hear my brother when I hear a recording of my voice
which is cool, because it sounds okay, and it reminds me of him. And, having been a disc jockey in years past, and having had a job that put me in extended conversations with many people, I'm satisfied my voice is at least not horrible. Besides, I've been told many times I have a very good "telephone voice".

Anyway, I don't think anyone as handsome and as cool as I am could POSSIBLY have anything other than a FANTASTIC voice!

9. Its far more sinister than that
The tape recording has captured part of your soul. The reason most people hate to hear themselves recorded is because deep down inside, their soul knows that a part of it is now missing forever. This feeling is manifested as a dislike for hearing ones voice on a recording.

10. I hate hearing my voice. It sounds very creepy to me...
People say I have a nice tone to my voice. Employers have wanted to hire me sight unseen, based upon the quality of my tone. I wish I could hear what they hear because when I hear my voice recorded it creeps me out.
