Anybody got a cure for dog urine odor in carpet?

I'll spare you the details. Is there any product I can buy that will remove the smell? I read somewhere that merely shampooing won't do the trick.

One: soak with white vinegar and then pick up with paper towels.

two: Arm and Hammer Pet Fresh used to do a pretty good job of getting the odor out...I tried using it to dry the spot and then wen back and vacuumed after it dried. Worked pretty well.

forget vinegar; it just adds to the ammonia smell.

so you can clean the carpet but the pad is the problem. Try some Spot Shot or rent a carpet cleamer that uses hot water.

I use Woolite Pet Stain carpet cleaner (use it just like it says on the bottle). Then, I apply Febreeze (the spray). If there's still a slight odor, I make a paste of baking soda and water, put it on the area, let it set till almost dry. Get up most with a damp towel and vacuum the rest.

This usually penetrates the pad, as well.

It's dirty, smells, takes a lot of WORK to keep up.

What are the benefits? Warm on the feet during cold weather? Wear FLIPFLOPS/sandals!!!!!!!

I haven't had a single allegy since getting RID OF CARPET! The entire small house is now floored with CERAMIC TILE!!!!!!!!! Yeah, yeah, so it has Depleted Uranium in it. If I live to be 65, I'm going to start SMOKING (because I always LIKED it)!

Keep the companion animals, get RID of the CARPET!!!!!!!!! And that's an ORDER.

that came with the house, but i am keeping the old wool area rugs i have found. and the cats are so damned pretty on them.

we laid vinyl strip "wood" thru the whole house and have never looked back

and it's durable as all hell, from what I've heard.

Now, me, well... I'm an apartment guy; it's a long, long story. But, I will say, I've expressed an interest in my mom's house once she's gone, and it has hardwood in the front half of the house. Covered by '70's carpeting.

If I end up with that house, ALL that carpet is going bye-bye.

Works WONDERS! Gets rid of the odor and the stain. Don't put the shampoo in the tank, just the oxydol. (I buy a big bucket of Sun Oxygen Cleaner at the Dollar General Store for $5 and it's just as effective as the more expensive stuff.)

I wish I could get rid of the carpet. I hate the goddamn stuff. Unfortunately, not my house. Completely out of my control, I'm afraid. All I can do is clean it.

Go to a PetSmart store or maybe any large pet store, and buy a bottle of "Nature's Miracle" or "Simple Solution."

Those are essentially the same product and they contain enzymes that will eat away the smell and the stain.

The liquid itself is like water (clear and water-like) and you can soak it into your carpet and let it sink into the carpetpad, then let it dry.

It will work--trust me. I used to have a cat that peed on the carpet and this is the ONLY product that REALLY worked on pet urine (dog or cat).

Soaked down, down, down, and I never had an odor problem there again.

The enzymes just work on that urine smell and stain like nobody's business.

And you don't have to put up with any kind of vinegary odor or anything.

Nature's Miracle is great.

A close friend of mine that is a nurse in the maternity ward suggested this and it works wonders. You get a spray bottle and fill it 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar and spray it on the spot. Yes, it stinks at first to you, but it gets the odor out better than anything I've used. Now I keep a spray bottle filled and use it on my carpet everywhere and it deodorized the entire house.

I love vinegar for smells. Worked wonders removing the awful men's bad cologne smell from the minivan I recently bought. I even tried baking soda and vinegar together. No success yet. I think I will visit the pet store tomorrow.

...have a cat pee in the same spot. It will mask the dog pee odor.

This stuff is AWESOME! I've tried every product out there ... Simple Solution, Nature's Miracle, PetZyme, etc ... Stain-Away is the best! I've got every pet owner I know hooked on the stuff.

You can only get it mail order from Drs. Foster and Smith (it's a pet catalog). They're having a sale on it right now - I just ordered some today. :)

On edit: I forgot to mention ... I have one of those steam cleaning machines for the carpet and I put Stain-Away in there. If it's an older carpet and/or the smell is in the padding, this will help. You can rent the machines at supermarkets, home improvement stores, etc. It's a lot cheaper than replacing the carpet. :)

PetZyme works well, with "enzymes" that fight "pet odor" deep within your carpet. However, it's pricey, and available only at PetSmart and other specialty pet stores.

Febreeze is the same damned thing, only it comes in a better selection of scents. Just be sure to use some paper towels/rags to soak up whatever wetness you can, spray down with Febreeze, allow to dry and penetrate, and then spray again.

It works wonders until that miserable potty-training period ends,

I would never let a dog or cat stay in my house. I did when I was younger, but when I stopped, I never had allergies again. It's not worth it.

Yesterday, my dog threw up in 4 places on my carpet. I used Fabreeze, and it seems to be helping.
