3. A gopher
"Goldie" When I was at the University of Minnesota (many years ago) it was decided that Goldie had to be redesigned to look tougher... How do you make a gopher look tough? I thought they might have him foam at the mouth - give him that rabid look. Instead, he looks like he's on sterioids.

4. the Toledo Rockets!
Our mascot, who until 2000 was someone dressed like *an actual rocket* got a lot of jokes about being a phallic symbol.

In 2000, the mascot morphed into more of a spaceman. Still pretty goofy.

Now I'm at UMass; we're the Minutemen.

45. Traveler the thwarted white horse
In my '80s era at USC he had room to roll, a full lap around the Coliseum and its historic Olympic track. Now they have shamelessly eliminated the track, chopped the seating capacity by a third and poor Traveler is allowed about 50 yards before turning around.

The USC band director, Dr. Arthur Bartner, must think he gets paid by the number of times we play Conquest. In the last two years, at least it's once again appropriate.

68. Hmmm I don't think we had one
When I was there they were the Redmen and afterwards they changed to the Storm and no I am not talking about St. John's. I don't remember a mascot. Maybe an Iowa DUer could help me out with what it is now?

For my graduate degree it was a commodore. Anyone care to guess where that was?

74. Simpson and Vanderbilt...
...asking about Vandy was sort of a rhetorical question, I mean who else is a commodore? Am I right about Simpson, they don't have a mascot, do they.

82. We were the Siwash
Which was a derogatory term applied to native americans (bastardized french sauvage). There was no mascot, no symbol apart from the bell tower of our "Old Main" building. Now, Knox College sports teams are referred to as "Prarie Fire" I suppose owing to our biology department's having a huge burn every spring.

The school teams are called the Chippewas, thus we obviously wouldn't use a mascot.

95. I don't remember having one
I don't think my older son did either.

My younger son's is some sort of clam called -- I'll come up with it any minute now -- aha, a Geoduck.

And here's a highly informative Geoduck FAQ page I just found:

Q: How do you pronounce 'geoduck'?

A: OK, so maybe people haven't been asking this, but they're almost certainly getting it all wrong, so you have to read this one anyway, and read it first.

The proper way to pronounce the word is "gooey-duck", not "gee-oh-duck". Unlike learning the proper way to pronounce words such as "Cthulhu" and "YHWH", this admittedly does not entail risk to your mortal soul. Nevertheless, if you one day happen to fall into a conversation with a group of geoduck aficionados, you don't want to instantly reveal yourself to be a clueless newbie outsider, now do you?

The word is also sometimes spelled 'goeduck', but only by people who don't know any better.

Edited on Tue May-18-04 11:39 PM by Stuckinthebush
No lie.

Presbyterian College Blue Hose. Goooooo Hose!

The mascot was a Scottish dude in a kilt with blue socks.

It was always comical when we would play basketball against one of our rivals, the Wofford Terriers. Which mascot was the dorkiest?

We also played sports against the Erskine Flying Fleet. I never really understood that one.

On edit...I had to give you the fight song (cue music):

On, on PC!
To vic-to-ry!
Garnet and Blue,
Oh we love you in everything you do..PRESBYTERIAN!

Spirts are high!
Never say die!
For if we win or if we lose
We'll still love you PC Blue
Go Hose, Go Blue!

Why in god's name do I still have that in my head? It's sitting there with the theme song to The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Why do we keep these things in our heads?

We don't have a Mascot. Mainly because there are no college sports like in the US.

The closest thing we have is Marvin, a flying robot; it won several important awards before European universities got excluded from US competitions.
