On my turntable: Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman's THEREMIN MUSIC FOR THE SMART SET.
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:58 PM by NightTrain
I found this LP at a flea market over the weekend and just threw it on. From the looks of it, the album must date back to the 1950s and the very early days of the Theremin.

The music itself is kinda cool, but I wish the tracks had a lot more Theremin and a lot less orchestral accompaniment, which too often veers off into Mantovani territory. On the other hand, these recordings are about 50 years old, and let's face it; the Mantovani sound actually sold millions of records when Ike was in the White House!

Whatever the case, I regard this material as an ancestor of today's New Age music, the main difference being that THEREMIN MUSIC FOR THE SMART SET has a rudimentary interest factor, its pretentious title notwithstanding.

1. THAT'S IT!! A ghost terrorizing my children is one thing;
...it's another thing entirely when he starts playing my Theremin!

2. did
you ever see the special on TV about the guy who invented that thing? It was pretty interesting, they brought out an old one and tinkered with it to get it to work again. Ed Wood would not have achieved his fame and glory without that thing.

3. See if you can find a copy of the...
sound track of 'Spellbound'... that was the first real introduction of the instrument to the movie going public. Early '50s.

4. Theremin's are strange and very cool...
...I used to have a record by a NYC band called Lothar and the Hand People and they had a Theremin player. Weird late '60s psychedelia.
Theremins and Chesley Bonestall paintings go together. Let's go back to the future....
