Anyone ever try out for Jeopardy?
Just got an email that I've been selected to try out when they come to DC in June. Surely, one of you smart people has been on or tried out for Jeopardy. What should I expect?

1. i tried out a year ago or so...
in Dallas. you'll have an appointment time, along with a room full of other people in your time as well. they'll probably have it at a hotel somewhere, in the ballroom or some other meeting room (i want to say there were probably 100 people in my group). you'll hear some junior producer-type person say howdy, blah blah blah, and eventually, you'll all take a test...you'll have an answer sheet with (i think i remember this right) 50 questions, 25 on each side, with a blank line next to the number. it's a fill-in-the-blank test. alex asks the question on a video monitor...you have a very short time to answer before he moves on to the next question. random questions, no sort of rhyme or reason to the order of questions.

once you're done with the test, they collect the papers, and some unlucky souls go into another room to grade them...while you're hanging out waiting for the results, they allow the test-takers to ask questions about the show, etc. (one of the...clue crew?...it's been a while...was there, people got all starry-eyed). when the test grades came back, only about four people passed a certain mark, which had to be pretty high b/c i didn't make it and i knew all but about 5 or 6 of the questions.

those of us who didn't "pass" were thanked for trying out, and dismissed...the people who passed moved to the next stage, and were going to play a mock game...no idea what happened after that point. the whole thing took about an hour or so, if i recall. dress appropriately, b/c you may get to the "mock game" stage...check the invite notice for what to wear.

good luck to you.

funny story...driving from houston to dallas for the tryout, i got pulled over, the cop asked why i was going to dallas and i said "i'm going to try out for jeopardy." i was outside the car when i said that, and it was obvious the cop didn't believe me, especially when he went around to my wife's side of the car and asked the same question...the look on his face when my wife said "we're going to dallas b/c my husband is trying out for jeopardy" was priceless. he gave me a warning and said good luck. :-)

2. I was on in 1987.....
OMG where does the time go?
We went to LA and this is the procedure (at least then). About 50 of us went into a room with college classroom-like desks. We took a 50 question multiple-choice-type test. I think that we were allowed 10 minutes. While the tests were corrected, we watched an old show and tried to out-answer each other. A few minutes later, they announced six names: I was one of the 3 men. All others were thanked as told that they could try again. My 'friend' who took the sets with me was not called and was she PISSED. (Never friendly again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Now whether they call the top six, of the top three men and top- three women, or there's a threshold of right answers, I don't know. The six of us then did a mock show for about 45 minutes. They took aou names and phone #'s and said they'd be in touch. I didn't hear anything and basically forgot about it. I found out later that they had tried to call me, but I had changed my phone number, without a froward and they couldn't get to me. About a year later ther did get me and I went back to LA for the taping. At that time, they did a week's worth of shows at once, with all of us gathering and waiting. If you e-mail me, I'll give you a few more details.

3. I've tried out for a few shows including Jeopardy.
Here's some VERY valuable advice: When they ask what you do for a living or what your hobbies are, make sure you tell them that whatever it is, it involves dealing with the public alot. Preferably some sort of entertainer or public speaker. They want to be sure you are not going to freeze up in front of the camera. When I tried out for The Weakest Link the girl sitting beside me only answered about 5 of the questions, but she said that she was a singer at a local club. Needless to say, she got picked. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you know (they assume if you applied to be on the show you're already well acquainted with it). That's just my $.02. :-)
