You have 15 minutes to evacuate your home: What do you take with you????
You have 15 minutes to evacuate your home. The only thing that will survive are the things you grab as you're heading out the door and you have 15 minutes to grab everything. What do you grab?

Me:

I'd grab my wicker suitcase on my dresser. Along with my makeup (which I really don't need), I keep my passport that has personal photos stashed away in it. I usually toss my purse (with the wallet & car keys) on top of it so I'll have all of that too.

I'd grab my laptop bag. It's usually packed with my laptop, since I rarely use it at home.

I'd find Evita and toss her in the cat carrier case, she won't take a leash/harness and she can be tricky to get back if she escapes. I'd quick put Abbie's collar on him and a leash so I can keep a hold of him. If I have time I'll throw the harness on him.

If I had time, I'd grab a few of my favorite books and cat toys. Maybe some of the pictures of my family.

22. Sorry, you're right

That is a major failing of conflagrations.

Maybe smokers should establish a stash of tobacco so the fire doesnt go to waste.

4. I have an accordion file with all my important stuff in it.
That, my wallet, checkbook and keys are the only essentials. But, if I have 15 minutes, I'd grab my overnight bag which has enough toiletries to see me through, and toss in a few pair of underwear and a couple of shirts.

I'd try to grab my original Rabrrrrrr Art, too. Might as well start over with some culture. :D

49. Thanks GOPisEvil!
You made my day!

I, too, would grab my original Rabrrrrrr art, and my photos and my journal and one of my "My Documents" back up CDs.

Though that's probably more than is allowable given the conditions of the original post.

5. husband, dogs, photo albums
I had a fire at my house, and was surprised that once I knew the pets were safe (I was only person there) I did not go back in even for photo albums.

once the first items were out, I'd probably go for some books although I don't know how the hell I'd even begin to choose which ones.

15. Cats, purse, passports, However, having been in a fire
I can tell you that the speed at which it propagated was so incredibly fast, that my brain simply shut down and I ran outside as I was, i.e. I did not even grab my purse or my jacket or boots. Fortunately, it was at the office so my cats weren't touched.

The fact that I had just got back from Europe the day before and was suffering from some jet lag might have also had an effect, but anyway it certainly taught me never to judge a persons reaction before having walked in their shoes.

18. Here's what I'd do . . .
I have a big laundry bag by the bed that has all kinds of clothes in it. Here's what I do. . .

I grab cat.
Shove cat in laundry bag.
Put laundry bag on desk (which actually has wheels and is easy to move).
Unplug computer, put computer on shelf under desk.
Roll the whole works out the door and down to the curb.
Run back inside (since I'm getting ready to move, everything else is in boxes).
Spend remainder of 15 minutes getting as many of the boxes as possible out to the curb as well.

Of course, if I didn't already have all my crap packed to move, this procedure would change a bit, but I still think the "wheel the desk/laundry bag/cat" out the door idea would be a priority :).

get a fifteen minute head start on everybody else in the neighborhood who's wasting time gathering up meaningless material possesions. When the tidal wave/asteroid/nuclear bomb/raging brush fire/whatever hit I'd be fifteen minutes closer to safety.

21. I won very little that can't be replaced
I'd throw all teh clothes I could fit into my big suitcase then dump my jewelry box in on top. I'd grab Baby Dog (stuffed dog I was given the day I was born). If I had time I'd toss in some of my really old figure skating video tapes but they aren't vital. I'd grab the throw off the back of the couch, my cell phone, wallet, and keys. The rest can be replaced.

25. Hrm....
Assuming it's safe to be there for those 15 minutes, and not a case of the sooner you're out the better...

My daughter and my cats. (Hubby can take care of himself/his stuff!)
Our safe full of passports/important legal stuff.
Computer that has pics on it, though most are backed up in that safe.
Physical pictures.
Journals/old letters.
If I still had time, maybe some clothes and things like that. Really, the most important to me would be the irreplaceables, though, and that's the definite things I listed above!

pictures/love letters and cards from ex's

29. Your Degree???
Why? The award i understand, because of it's personal value. But, if you didn't have your diploma, would you forget what you learned?

I have a bachelor's diploma, and three masters diplomas. I have no idea where they are. Somewhere in the house, i suppose. Why would the parchment be that important?

Am i that cynical?

Complete first edition copy of the Waverly Novels. Old family Bibles from my great grandfather.

If I had time, laptop and my overnight bag. Every thing else can be replaced by insurance. I would really try to get my grandparents old roll top desk but we had to remove a door to get it in the place so I doubt I could get it out in 15 minutes.

34. Depends on why I had to evac . . .
If it's just because of a localized disaster (forest fire, flood) I grab my dogs and cats, my guitars, my wallet (passport and other important docs are in a fire safe), my weed and my leatherman.

If it's because of impending meteor crash I grab my pants, drop them and kiss my ass goodbye.

43. When the big fire hit here in California a year and a half ago...
...We only had 15 minutes to grab stuff out of our house as we were being evacuated.

We grabbed the cat and her food and litter box, first, and stuffed underwear, socks, and a few days worth of hygiene products into a pillow case. We also grabbed our cell phones, cell phone chargers, laptops, and pagers, and digital camera, and my tools which were already in the car anyway.

The last thing I did out the door as the police sirens were blaring at us to get out was snap this picture:

View from out the back yard. For perspective these flames are topping off at a hundred feet.

  • Speedos
  • cats (in carrier)
  • main computer (mostly for the data)
  • laptop (if home)it belongs to the office, not me)
  • cell phone (it belongs to the office, not me)
  • filing cabinet (contains papers and licences)
  • photographs
  • out of print books
  • LP's (out of print)
  • TV, stereo, VCR, DVD
  • synthesizers (no longer made)
  • clothes, especially suits
  • contents of the freezer (gotta be $1000 worth of food in there)
  • Birds (maybe)
  • Ahknaten (partner)(maybe)

I know that sounds like a lot of stuff, but you can do a lot in 15 minutes if you're just getting it out the door and dumping it on the front lawn.
