I've been trying to process this for the last hour. You find a cello in a case on the side of the road on your way to work. You bring it home to your cabinet maker boyfriend and tell him to either repair the instrument (logical) or make it into a unique CD holder. Wait...what?

And once you find out that the cello you were going to turn into a space for your Mariah Carey records is actually a Stradivarius made in 1684 named "General Kyd" and worth millions, just how stupid do you feel? Frankly, I'd feel embarrassed for wanting to turn a 320 year old Stradivarius into a glorified CD rack.

1. But it would have made an excellent bong.
Those Stradivarius bongs are very rare.

3. I can't figure out why anyone would throw out a cello
Regardless if it's a Strat or a knockoff. Cellos aren't cheap.

4. I read an article about this...
apparently the principal cellist for the LA Philharmonic left the instrument outside his apartment building. Getting stuff out of the car, and forgot to bring it in...and someone on a bicycle came by, saw it, and made off with it. I ALSO read that it's the oldest cello with the original label...which means that whoever stole it probably realised what he had once he opened the case and got a really close look at it, and ALSO realised that there was no way in hell he could even attempt to sell it to anyone.

And...a CD holder? Someone get that woman the fuck away from the interior design shows on television before she does something REALLY dreadful. She doesn't need any more bright ideas like that.

I am glad that the cello was recovered in reparable shape.

7. I played the cello from 5th-10th grades
And loved it. I'd love to get my hands on a good one and learn to play again, but good ones are very expensive. I can't imagine what this lady thought it was! That said, if I'd found the cello I'd have turned it in (although I'd certainly love to have a Stradivarius!)

8. I played violin for about 8 years through elementary and middle school
wish I took it more seriously, and wish I still had a violin... and wish my right hand wasn't nerve damaged beyond the ability to even play a little...

oh damn... now I'm depressed :-(

9. The cello is in poor condition

and the label is not in plain sight - I think the thief looked at the cracks (it is not cracked in the sound panel, but there are three splits/cracks) and thought s/he couldn't get much for it and so abandoned it. At least she gave it back.

on edit: not the thief, the woman who found it.

11. when I read this I thought it was a joke
Edited on Wed May-19-04 05:57 PM by tigereye
that is very scary. Surprised though that anyone would leave anything that valuable outside these days! Although you often read stories about classical folk leaving their violins, etc on trains and planes occasionally. CD holder is the last thing I would have thought of.

12. Ah, give her a break
It's a 3.5 million dollar cello, btw.

She's apparently promised to give at least part of the 50,000 in reward money to music education charities.

And, really, if you found a cello in a dumpster, would you think it might be something valuable? Or somebody's middle school reject?
