I watched "The Reagans" movie tonight
I rented it and I really don't see what the big deal was. First of all, it was about as good as most other made for TV stuff, which is to say it was mediocre and watchable. I didn't find it to be a hatchett job at all, fairly assesing his strengths and weaknesses. The Republican National Committee and the radio talk show hosts know how to dish it out, but they sure don't know how to take it. I have seen many movies protraying presidents in an unfoavorable light, even the great ones. Last month I rented "Path to War" which portrays LBJ in a far worse light than the Reagan movie depicted Reagan. "Path to War" depicts LBJ as an obsessed meglomaniac. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before somebody makes a movie about Bill Clinton depicting him as a sex crazed pervert. I doubt the DNC will waste their time complaining.

4. I watched it last night.
Thought it was boring. Don't understand what all the fuss was about either. I didn't think the actress who played Nancy looked or acted much like Nancy but, Brolin was definately a good pic for Raygun. Looked very much like him.

5. I watched it on Showtime.. when it first was advertised..
Actually, what I gleaned from it was the vociferous ability of the Right Wing to operate unhindered. The movie depicted a gradual, usurping of the presidency via Herr Bush and his merry band of charlatans.

I found new respect for Nancy Reagan. She knew early on, there were those, some identified in the movie, who were operating under the presidential seal without Reagan's knowledge. No wonder Bush was so angry Clinton Won. His winning stalled their plans for a global takeover for 8yrs.

This was the primary reason for the Repugs decrying the movie be shown on mainstream tv. It revealed them for the crudest, corruptus, ruthless, lying bunch they really are.

Now we know why they persecuted and demonized Clinton unrelentingly. They demeaned Clinton unmercifully while propping themselves up as good Christians with impeccable family values. They said anything they had to say, just to get their foot in the door...And it worked.

There are unseen factions here still at war-

Bush is destined to lose.

6. I got the impression they were able to get away with so
much because Reagan wasn't all that smart to begin with and I think he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's about 2 years before the end of his second term.

7. The movie accomplished what it set out to do, for me anyway..
Granted the nuances were subtle and I was almost halfway through the movie before I realized what I was actually comprehending. (at that point, I made myself a drink)

The week long propaganda line put out by the GOP was casting the movie as an insulting demeaning film done at the behest of democrats wanting to smear Reagan's name..the GOP mouthpieces made the assumption plausible because Barbra Streisand and her husband were involved.

Addressing your question about Reagan's intelligence. As far as Reagan himself is concerned. The movie depicted him as outsmarting Bush and his minions in the Iran/Contra scandal. He really excelled in diplomatic skills and was intuitively a very clever man. You have to give him credit for that. He did it in his own way. He knew Bush was in danger of exposue. That was his trump card if it needed to be played. That and because of the loyal following garnered over the years and his deteriorating health condition and in everyone's best interest. There wasn't a problem keeping the scandal at the military level. Bush was going to be elected and pardon all his cronys... yes, I would say he was very smart.
