Who has power windows in their car? A question:
Why is the passenger side window so much slower to roll up/down?

Are they cheaping out on the motors?

1. further away
from the hampster wheel?

i notice this too on my Da's mini-van. He's replaced 2 motors, one on each side so far.
actually, i guess i should say 'i' have replaced one of them. He fought one and with the 2nd i volunteered since my arms are smaller to fit in the door passages, etc.

2. Are you rolling it up from the driver's seat?
If you are, it could either be that it takes a lot more time to transfer power from the toggle to the motor or it is just because you sit next to the driver window so it appears to roll up faster.

It may all be a mirage!

3. It just seems slower

since the speed of light is slower when you have someplace to go.

Or maybe its a Quantum effect. I can never remember ...

That Car Manufacturers Keep Putting In Those Ridiculous Back Seat Windows That Only Go Down 3 Friggin' Inches So Some Stupid Ass Kid Doesn't Fly Out!!

WTF! I Don't Have Children - And If I DID, They'd Be Smart Enough To Not Fly Out Of The Window, And If Not, Good Riddance!

Edit : My Car Has Manual Windows And They Go ALL The Way Down (Again, No Pun Intended) :)

7. IIRC, You can blame Nader.
I'm not gonna look it up, but I seem to remember that Ralph had something to do with the halfway-down rear windows.

Apparently, children were jumping out of back windows in droves.

I could be wrong. Again, I'm just working from fuzzy memories.

11. I like the way Mazda dealt with this
The back windows on my Protege go down about two thirds to three quarters of the way, but there is an override switch on the driver's side that prevents any of the passenger windows from being operated -- I guess it basically disconnects their motors. Flip that switch, and you've got complete control of all the windows in the car.

9. Wind Pressure
there are actually several factors at work that cause the passenger window to move up or down more slowly ...

first, we need to make a basic assumption ... your assessment of comparative window speeds is usually made with an empty passenger seat ... we draw this conclusion because a passenger would probably operate their own window in most cases ...

so, if you are in the driver's seat and the passenger seat is empty, there is more weight on the left side of the car ... the added weight causes the left side of the car to move more slowly than the right side ...

the increased speed on the right side causes faster wind to hit the passenger window slowing its up or down motion ... also, because the left side of your car moves more slowly, the car turns to the left ever so slightly ... this further shields the left-side window from the wind pressure allowing it to operate more quickly than the passenger window which is more exposed to the wind ...

there you have it !!! if you don't like this highly scientific explanation, it could just be some kind of defect or something ...

12. Nope.
a) I tried it in the garage, so wind is not a factor.
b) I sat on the passenger side to test it.
c) I like baby geese.

I think Ford/Mercury is cheaping out on the window motors.

10. Do you have "one-touch down" for the drivers side?

If you do, the motor on that side (driver) has more power (turns at a higher rpm), hence the difference.

If you don't, I have no clue...

14. I replaced a power motor in a Subaru (I think) a while back
Edited on Thu May-20-04 08:14 PM by DancingBear
When I went to the auto parts store, the counter guy asked me if it was for driver or passenger. When I asked him why, he told me what I told you.

I thought he was kidding at first, but there really were two different power motors available - one for each side.
