Hey Cicada DUers! Check in here
For those that aren't in the loop of what in the hell I'm talking about, I'll brief you. Every seventeen years, the Cicada insect mates, births and dies. It's a really beneficial insect, it only eats tree sap and contains lot's of protien for predators that eat them. Infact people in this area are putting Cicadas in pizzas:)
The only problem was the news broadcast made their arrival seem like a plague was coming to the city. If I was in the news department it would be like the olympics were coming to town.

(The typical Olympic theme music plays)
Anchorman: The countdown begins for the glorius return of the Cicadas.

I'd have a guy waiting to light the torch, to officially announce the begining of the arrival of the Cicada's. It'd be Fun!:D

1. What Did Letterman Say?
Every 17 years the Cicadas emerge from the ground around here (New York) to have sex. Wait, that's the Republicans!

3. We have them in our back yard on our pine and maple trees EVERY year
Edited on Sat May-22-04 12:02 AM by glarius
They don't come up till July or August...They stay underground, I thought it was 13 years, but anyway, there's always a new crop coming up every year....The ones we get look just like the ones I've been seeing on TV...I live in southern Ontario, Canada....I guess they're the same cicadas....????

5. I just ran across a bag of 17-year-old cicada shells
My older son (who was eight then) collected them off the trees the last time they came around. My younger son (who was five) was terrified of them, so of course his brother would dangle the bag in his face to freak him.

Even years later, if he came across the bag by accident, it would still creep him out. My older son refused to throw them away, so about the time they were both in high school, I hid the bag at the bottom of my nightgrown drawer. I figured no one would ever think to look for them there.

Neither did I. I forgot all about them and just found them yesterday while I was looking for some family photos.

7. My ears hurt like I've walked out of a rock concert
after playing disc golf yesterday. Damn, they are loud. Though the invasion isn't as bad as I was expecting from all the hype.
