The Martini

These days, the word Martini has been bastardized to include almost any concoction that is mixed in a shaker and strained into a Martini glass.

The Classic Martini
1 1/2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
Stir with cubed ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass.

I like an olive AND an onion in my Martini. I find that is now called a "Gin Salad". I prefer either anchovy or jalapeno stuffed olives.

I do not enter into the "shaken or stirred" controversy. I like my Martinis Very Dry.
What's to stir OR shake?

A few nights ago I ordered a (very dry) Martini in a restaurant. A few minutes later the waitress returned and asked "Do you want that a gin, or vodka Martini?" I did not become overbearing or pedantic and explain that a Martini IS gin. I just said "Gin, please."
I have certainly mellowed in my old age.

From old blue eyes himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt to, of course, Bond (James Bond), the Martini has been a power drink for the rich and famous.

The legendary J.D.Rockefeller once remarked to friends: "Before choosing your hotel, order a martini cocktail at the bar. Then, you'll know if the hotel is good enough for you..."

H. L. Mencken once called the Martini, 'the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet.'

"I like to have a martini
Two at the very most --
After three I'm under the table,
After four, I'm under my host."
-- Dorothy Parker

.....In 1935 MGM was making China Seas, starring Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. Robert Benchley, a featured player, was required to spend most of the day floating in the studio's water tank. When he was finally allowed to climb ashore he reputedly announced, "I must get out of these wet clothes and into a dry Martini."

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink 'cause when they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're gonna' feel all day.--Dean Martin

Cheers
:toast:
p.s. It's the best cure for a hangover that I know of.

1. I like a classic martini
but, alas, gin makes NSMA feel like she got hit in the head with an axe...so now I favor a vodka martini...from time to time I get a craving and say..."screw it" I'll take tylenol tomorrow and order up a sapphire tini...up...but I like my vermouth too...so I don't order it dry....I'll take an olive an onion an anchovy...whatever the bartender's got

2. A few tips:
Can't drink 'em all night, like I can Scotch.
So I only have two.
And then...just one more.
Take the tylenol or ibuprofin (which works best for me) BEFORE retiring.
Really helps take the edge off the next morning.

And gin is FIGHTIN' WHISKEY.
Believe me.

6. Actually that's pretty dangerous
as little as two drinks in your system can cause liver toxicity with Tylenol and can kill you

11. Doesn't seem to bother me.
And I take ibuprofen, not acetaminophen.
Just had a liver function test due to a change in meds and everything's good. Thanks for the concern, though.

3. Gin is nasty.
Call it what you will, I like a vodka martini in a bucket, lots of olive juice, and as many olives as the bartender can cram on the little sword. And the vermouth should be a suggestion, not a component.

4. I think it's an 'acquired' taste.
Much like Scotch.
First drink of Scotch I ever had tasted like medicine.
Bad medicine.

5. As much fun as I have with alcohol, I hate martinis
Why? Because I can't stand gin, and hate vodka. Yuck. Vodka is like a liquid yo-yo.
Give me a whiskey or tequila drink any day. I'll take a Manhattan or an Old-Fashioned or a Whiskey Sour any day, or better yet, a simgle malt or a shot of Patron.

10. I have always loved gin
and only took up drinking martinis a couple of years ago. I'm now sorry I wasted time drinking anything else.

But as a friend of mine recently pointed out, martinis are like breasts on a woman: one is not enough, and three are too many.

have Club Soda on ice with a twist of lemon or lime. I will watch with great envy as you slowly sip your Martini right there before my greening eyes. Sigh.

Must fine a new doctor.

Edited on Sat May-22-04 03:13 PM by GOPisEvil
The ingredients:
1.5 oz gin or vodka - whatever - I'm not picky these days.
1 olive
1 shaker with ice
1 picture of Benedetto Carpano, the inventor of vermouth
1 martini glass

Making the GOPisEvil-tini:
Pour gin or vodka into shaker, shake to cool
Show martini glass the picture of Carpano
Pour cold booze into martini glass
Garnish with olive

14. Once asked a bartender how much vermouth
he put in a "very dry" Martini.
He circled his thumb and forefinger and said "Zip!".

15. Exactly!
I Am Extremely Found Of Gin - Nowadays, I Simply Order Sapphire On The Rocks With A Twist Of Lemon Or Lime... It Doesn't Confuse Even The Greenest Of Bartenders.

17. Let us sing praises to the Martini!
Bombay Sapphire gin. It is the nectar of the gods. Mother's milk. Liquid love. Pure perfection in a beautiful blue bottle.

Vermouth. Spray a little from an atomizer into your glass. Or not.

Olives, onions, whatever floats your boat.

Lots of ice.

Shaken, not stirred. Or go ahead and mix up a pitcher.

Two is plenty.

Revel in the simple joys of life.

Deal with the headache in the morning.

18. Thanks for the fine post--in addition, I'd say that the martini glass
is by far the most sophisticated looking beverage glass ever created.

A martini without vermouth is "naked gin" -- no le gusta para me. Dust is dry too, but I don't want to drink it.

Also, I've found the colder, the better. Chill the glasses, chill the shaker, and I like to "wake it up" by shaking it vigorously for a good eight to ten seconds.

As for the best gin to use, if there's something better than Tanqueray, I'd like to hear about it. Also, makes a great gin and tonic (G & T) for when you're too lazy to make a martini.

Freezes the olive almost solid.

24. Yes, a Martini IS Gin
However the James Bond Martini is comprised of 2 parts Gin, 1 part Vodka and 1/2 oz vermouth (dry)

25. A couple of months ago, I found myself at the bar in the top of the
Hancock Building in Chicago.

They had a big, long list of frou-frou drinks, under the heading "martinis." Quite a few of them had no gin, no vermouth, no olives. Quite a few of them were colors not found in nature.

I'm not sure if it was an act of rebellion or what, but I ordered a drink (I'm sure it had a fancy name) consisting of extremely cold Bombay Sapphire and a couple of big olives. Oh, and a swizzle stick that looked like the Hancock Building. It was very nice.

The last couple of times I've found myself in a bar, I've ordered Bombay Sapphire/rocks/olives. I guess the straight booze has grown on me.
