DU men - speaking of tools - don't ya just love them?
I mean, walking to the tool section at Sears...or maybe one day you happen upon a Snap-on truck.

I love them...even when I have no clue what they're for, I love looking at them........

What's your favourite tool brand?

1. Porter Cable for power tools.
Good tools at a price that isn't going to have the SO busting your ass over it.

Milwaukee still makes the best Sawz-All though. Craftsman used to be my choice for hand tools, but I've moved over to Huskey in recent years.

6. Porter-Cable you say?

I need to buy power tools. Home-ownership demands it. :-)

12. As a general rule, yes.
However there are exceptions for specific tools, like the Milwaukee I mentioned. However even in the case of the exceptions PC pakes a very good version, so you won't be going wrong with them anyway. I recommend buying tools as you need them, as opposed to buying everything at once, and buying the best you can afford. Something my father taught me a long time ago. "Cheap tools aren't" as he was fond of quoting me.

Preferably Bosch blue, but I don't own any.

Could never stand the Sears Craftsman tools. I was bringing them back broke every two weeks. They never could handle any torque.

14. Sears is fun but my favorite
power tools are made by DeWalt. I do have some Sears power tools also so I've had to buy 2 combo battery charger/radio's; one for the DeWalt tools and one for the Sears Craftsman tools. My shop is so colorful! Red, yellow and black! I have 2 rolling toolchests which are Sears Craftsman brand in black. I have 4 5-drawer chests which are Sears Craftsman red.

For handtools I like Craftsman. My house hammer is generic though since it mainly is used for hanging pictures and is small enough to fit into the kitchen junk drawer.

15. I must be testosterone deficient
Although I actually had it tested once, and it was OK.

I have no interest in tools, even though I like making electronic projects. I also don't drink beer, don't like most competetive TV sports, hate the smell of cigars, don't own a flannel shirt or a baseball cap, have no interest in cars (except for things like fuel efficiency and crash survivability), and have disliked most of the porn I've seen.

It could have been that radioactive spider that bit me when I was in mad scientist school ...

OK, I was into model rocketry. So were a couple of girls I knew.

18. Quit hanging around people who smoke cheap cigars
I used to hate the smell of cigars too. Then someone who smokes quality cigars showed me the difference between short-filler and long-filler cigars.

Now I smoke cigars.

19. There's a "Rush Room" next to where I shop
It's the lounge of a cigar shop. How right-wing is it? Well, they have an antique cigar-store indian displayed prominently in the window.

Supposedly, they sell only the finest (and most expensive) stogies.

I guess it's a matter of clientele, too.

I'm sure the place attracts a great many tools.

17. Hey, it ain't brand - it's design

All kinds of folks make good tools - for instance:

Porter-Cable - the 9518 fixed base router is the perfect choice for a router table, but it stinks if you use it as a stand alone tool because it's so heavy.

DeWalt - their DW625 plunge router is very easy to use and lightweight, but their fixed base routers are ergonomically "challenged."

Makita - their cordless drill batteries last the longest of any major brand, and the re-charge time is very fast as well. However, their belt sander has the worlds worst dust collection (or lack thereof) system, and it's always in the way.

Delta - they make the best 13" planer on the market, and their drill press is better than stuff costing twice as much. I wouldn't take a nickel for anything else in their product line, though.

Bosch - love my Bosch jig saw - hated the circular saw (got rid of it and bought a Festool). Festool stuff is way overpriced, but I got this demo model at a tool show.

Check out product reviews before you buy any tool - Amazon/tool crib, epinions, Fine Woodworking message boards, etc. It's well worth doing your research first.

Yes. We. Love. Tools.

22. Have you seen the new Porter-Cable circular saw?
Last month we closed out our Porter-Cable circular saws. I just thought we were going to stop selling them--logical, because in this market the over-$100 tools only really sell if they're yellow.

Last week we got the new one in. There are two big differences between the two tools: the blade lock (no more sticking a screwdriver in the teeth to hold the blade while you change it--don't tell me you don't do this!) and the blade crank. Instead of using a wrench and a screwdriver to change a blade, push the blade lock, turn the blade crank with your fingers, and the blade comes off with no tools required.

Best part: the price is a couple bucks lower--IIRC, $110 for the new against $118 for the old.

21. Well, it depends...
Most of my favorite handheld electric tools are made by Porter-Cable, except for two: Milwaukee makes a great reciprocating saw (unless you've got $200 to put into a Porter-Cable Tiger Claw, which has an articulating head so you can put the blade at the angle you need it--exceptionally handy when you are trying to saw between two studs that are too close together to fit a regular Sawzall), and Hilti makes the very best rotary hammers. If you have extreme amounts of cash, Festool is an exceptional brand of tools, but you have to buy all your accessories from Festool because the arbors are different sizes from anyone else's.

My favorite handplanes are Stanley Baileys.

I love Marples Blue Chip chisels--very good quality and inexpensive enough that if I drop one down a well, I'm not going to go into convulsions.

The best hammers are Estwing.

Stationary power tools? Except for lathes, I prefer Powermatic. Powermatic makes a good lathe, but I want a great one. There is a great one on the market.

I want a Oneway 2436 lathe really, really bad--most lathes have to be field modified the second you get them to get rid of the vibration, and here's how you do it: throw the stand it comes with in the trash, build a box to set the lathe on, and put about a thousand pounds of sand in the box. The Oneway doesn't need this because it generally doesn't vibrate unless you can't center the workpiece (in part because it weighs so much they give you a week's notice before delivering it so you can rent a forklift to bring it into your shop, but also because the motor's in the base), but if you like to make bowls out of whole logs there's a compartment for sand in the base.
