Driving across the country in June -- recommendations for books on tape?
Driving from southeastern Pennsylvania to northern Idaho/Montana to visit our daughter and do some hiking and mountain-biking.

We've got plenty of music, but we need some inspiration for books to listen to. Any category.

Thanks!

1. If you like the Coen Brothers films
see if you can find a copy of 'Gates of Eden' by Ethan Coen. John Goodman, John Turturro, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi and Matt Dillon all contribute readings on the audio cassette.

Weird, vulgar, violent and funny stories!

2. Frank McCourt...
... Angela's Ashes and `Tis are both good (read by Frank McCourt himself), and while abridged from the original book, I also like Molly Ivins' Bushwhacked.

For pure diversion, see if you can find an audio edition of The DaVinci Code, if you've not read it already.

3. The Delaney Sisters "Having Our Say"
Two African-American sisters who lived past one hundred (died in the late 1990s) -- excellent narratives, fascinating experiences. Mrs. V. and I listened to them when we drove cross-country in 2000. You won't regret the purchase. Enjoy your trip!!

I'll hear about something good while randomly surfing the posts. That one sounds fascinating. :-)

4. If you're interested in brushing up on foreign language skills
...I've found language instruction tapes/CDs in the car are really great. I recommend Pimsleur--they have series for just about any language you'd want.

5. Clive Cussler
His books are very visual, and the books on tape are the same. I drove from OK to NC and listened to Deep Six by Cussler, and became totally immersed.

7. I think short story collections are best on trips
During several trips to Boston a while back I listened to some mystery collections, "Murder in Mahattan" and "Murder in Los Angeles". There was a different actor for each story and the best were Betsy Palmer and Roddy McDowell.

Dick Francis books are also good for long trips because they are simply written, straightforward and exciting.

For non-fiction, some great listens are "How the Irish Saved Civilization" and Campbell's "The Hero with 10,000 Names".

And last but not least, there's Jim Dale's flawless readings of the Harry Potter books.

9. Greg Palast's "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy."
It's a five-CD set and is read by such like-minded folks as Janeane Garofalo, Al Franken, et al.

10. Virtual Light by William Gibson
Partly because it was very good; partly for the reader (Frank Muller). Apparently Muller is the leader in the field, so almost anything you might like is likely to have been read by him (even the frickin' Left Behind series!:))

11. Thanks to everybody -- great ideas!
You can always count on DU to come up with interesting things you would never think of yourself.

A few of these should make those miles melt away.

12. Al Franken's "Why Not Me?"
Hilarious story of Al's mythical campaign for president in 2000. Tremendous performance by Al and a few others.
