What does "jumped the shark mean"?
OK, I guess I've kind of gathered what it means. Something, say The Sopranos (the most current example I've read), that has gone downhill, lost it's magic touch, suddenly begun to suck, etc. (Close?)

But is there a metaphor I'm missing? On the face of it, "jumping a shark" would seem more akin to "dodging a bullet."

Did this saying come from a specific movie or celebrity? It *seems* to have gained rapid currency in the last 2 months...

Just curious and geeky and whatnot.

The episode where The Fonz jumped his motorcycle over a shark tank is generally regarded as the point where the series went downhill.

7. Wow
What eye opening responses! Thanx all. I would have never have guessed the specificity at play here, i.e. TV shows, the "Happy Days" origin.

I knew you folks would have a handle.

:toast:

So has "Alias" jumped the shark?

10. Thanks
I was not sure of the exact derivation of the term. The link was helpful. I am also not too proud to admit my ignorance.

11. Ignorance is nothing to be ashamed of
Now willfull ignorance or persistant ignorance is another matter. But we all start out ignorant of everything and we do not all learn the same things at the same time. The only way to find out stuff is to ask questions.
