Well what the hell do I do now
I can't survive off my current jobs, and because I actually had a good job before the recession hit I'm now typecast into a industry that is being outsourced (Computer Aided Drafting).

So since I'm clearly not making enough money, can't seem to even get a temp job, and thus can't afford to go back to school since I actually live not in my parents house but out on my own and am trying to make my own way. The question is thus;

Which branch of the military should I join! Yes you see they're always hiring and I'm getting desperate, so I figured I'd ask the good ole folks at DU to help me make a decision. They might even give me a way to get thru college.

Army, Navy, or Air Force... Sorry no Marines. No offense to the marines but I have a brain, I would prefer to actually use it as something other than a bullet catcher. Right now I'm leaning towards the Navy or the Army. Sure I know they lie, but I figure I should at least try to drag some money out of them if I enlist. I've got a freind in the army right now, he's part of a MLRS crew. The Army says it has good sign on bonuses, and what with Iraq going down the way it is, I am sure they'll be playing that one up. Not really sure about Navy sign on bonuses, but they appear to have a good hands on technical training system. At least my boss who served in Vietnam aboard a boat said he learned a lot as ships electrician. Plus the violence onboard ship is so very clean, it's pushing buttons to launch missles at random brown people. Then again maybe I'm just romaticising that. Anyhow, what do y'all think?

1. Consider the Coast Guard

2. Navy
Unless we get into it with China you'll only have to worry about getting killed in an accident. Don't pick Corpsman (some wind up with the Marines)and don't pick SeaBees (my old reserve unit is in Iraq now- 6 killed). Good luck!

3. join any branch and have em teach you a trade...
like make em teach you how to fix jets or something, or you mentioned you got some skills in computers, talk to a recruiter and see what kinda place they can offer you.

anyway that seems the most useful function of military service, afterall you will be giving up alot, why not get a useful skill out of it?

hey, the military isnt for me, but i am not gonna slam it, the armed forces just does what the prez tells em to.

4. The sad part is that
I don't want to go into the military at all, but I'm too poor to actually go to college and too typecast into my previous industry. It's fucking horrible. I'm in San Francisco Bay Area, it's like somebody set off a nuclear weapon for the job market. Well at least for me it is, other people are doing fine.
