5. I've heard him too, and he sounds extremely bright...

...but that doesn't make him innocent. I'm not entirely convinced, but it seems that there is awfully strong evidence against him, and nothing really plausible or convincing about a conspiracy to frame him.

The only reason I brought it up is that I know for a fact that there are thousands of prisoners whose cases are MUCH MORE compelling, and it always puzzles me why a certain segment of the left is so enamored of this man.

I'd personally be much more motivated to try and free Leonard Peltier than Mumia - if for no other reason, because he was on Indian land and the FBI had no business being there...

7. Cop Killer and political prisoner.
It's rather obvious that he got an unfair trial, and on that grounds he should be retried.

He very well may have shot the cop, although the cop shot him too. And cops had a tendency back in the seventies of murdering civil rights activists. Just look at the Huey Newton case, he shot and killed a cop and was justified. The fact that he is on death row for first degree murder is ridiculous, how can it be premeditated if the cop randomly stopped him? Assuming he shot the cop, and that's a pretty big assumption, cops frame people whether you like to admit it or not, it was at worst manslaughter and at best self defense.
