1. I have a love/hate relationship with it

It is the only player for much of the stuff I like and yet it seems to hang up and cause problems half of the time I use it. It seems that whenever it prompts for upgrade and I choose not to, it crashes. Is it my problem or theirs?

are IMO intentional (sabotage) bugs Microsoft introduces to favor their own Windows Media Player, which unfortunately hangs on their own platform.

That's the way the game is played. Another technology that Microsoft ripped from a truly pioneering smaller firm.

keeps usurping all other players no matter how many times you try to fix it . . . I may miss some videos, but that's a small price to pay for keeping this crap off my computer . . .

8. Alternatives

I find REalPLayer to be really clunky. When I press on the menu items, it seems to take five minutes for it to show. Arrgh.

The solution I gfound was to keep REalPLayer on my machine but use alternative players.

The easiest and handies is Windows PLayer Classic (NOT Windows Media PLayer) a freeware program that can play both REalPLayer and Windowes Media files as well as otehr format. It;s really a simple and lightweight program.

Also Jet Audio, which is anotehr all-purpose player that can play REal PLayer and otehr formats.
