On Thursday evening the Great Lawn in Central Park was the site of a showdown that had been anticipated for months: High Times vs. The Onion...From 1996 through 2003 the High Times softball team has been the best team in what is informally called the magazine league. Going into Thursday's game, High Times had an unbeaten streak of 19 games going back to last season. The only team that High Times did not beat during that stretch was The Onion, which held on for a tie when the teams met last season.

Indeed, High Times has forged a reputation for unusual intensity in the famously relaxed magazine league, in which some participants spend more time drinking beer on the sideline than they do chasing fly balls in the outfield. In the past, High Times teammates have practiced psychological warfare on opponents. They have painted their faces and pounded large drums. In the first game the team ever played, in 1991, against The New Yorker, when the esteemed baseball writer Roger Angell threw out the first pitch, High Times sent out a costumed mascot, Dreddy Duck, to swing in vain at the ceremonial delivery, then collapse onto home plate...Today, the High Times flamboyance is manifest chiefly in its team's nickname, the Bonghitters, which is emblazoned across the front of the players' green and gray uniforms. The team logo is a marijuana leaf.

The Onion stranded two runners in the top of the seventh, and the game was over. The teams formed two long lines and exchanged hand slaps. The Bonghitters gathered between the pitcher's mound and home plate to belt out their victory song, "Take Me Out to the Bong Game."

(much more)
